Not all orthodontic treatments are the same e.g. overbite, underbite, overcrowding are all addressed with braces, but the appliance required will be specific to the individual. I am not convineced that the super quick braces will cater for all. Extractions for me were the least painfull experience in the entire journey. I am sure others would reflect the same

That seems pretty fair to me.
I've just had one of my incisors removed, and that alone with all the complicated surgery in the background (gum graft, bone graft, implant, temporary braces) came up to about 5000 euros.

That sounds like a really painful and awkward experience, I hope they do it in small steps.
I almost died a little bit when they were operating on my the second time.
The post-op pain lasted a few weeks (on Tramadol throughout most of it).

Sorry for the scary part, but this girl is going to need a big old hand to squeeze for the next few years. foot-in-mouth

surfisup1000: Thailand comes to mind.

Not possible with orthodontistry with regular adjustments to the braces every couple of months.

Maybe for the extractions but only worth it if you happened to be passing that part of the world, but needs to be done at a specific date relative to the linked orthodontic treatment.

I'm tempted to move back to the UK for a while to get my rotten wisdom teeth extracted for free by student dentists on the NHS.

So just an update guys - she decided to go the NZ root. Extraction happened last Thursday and she was pretty bad for Friday and the weekend. She went to work on Monday but it was really tough for her. She took yesterday off and today seems much better! Braces to be installed on the 22nd. Thanks for the advice!

I can tell you right now that there is a very good reason why they are Student dentists.
I live in the UK, and even though it would have saved me 5 grand, I would never wish British dentists upon anybody.

May as well go to Croatia. They have really good dentists, and it's not that expensive.

I had about 6 or 7 (I forget exactly!) teeth out when I was about 11, including some second teeth that were still under the first ones! All done under general. About all I recall now is waking up with a mouth full of gauze pads...!

Then I had a brace for perhaps 3 years after that. The teeth had to come out so that the orthodontist could gain enough space to fit the remainder into once they were properly aligned.

My advice FWIW is if anyone has children with teeth that need alignment etc - do it whilst they are kids. They will thank you for it later.

Hi all

I'm an early middle aged adult and had a couple of complimentary orthodontic assessments. Something a dentist said I should consider. Both were $6-$7K once treatment started

One recommended long term orthodontics and said 2 extractions are probably required (tbc with xrays) and the other suggested short term orthodontics and no extractions as they said they don't believe in that. It appears the Orthodontic community is split on that. My view is only if necessary i.e. no alternatives to get the best result

1. Did anyone find they required bite correction due to what is called incorrect Occlusion ?

2. Has anyone had their braces adjusted at a different practice to who fitted them i..e because they had them fitted overseas or moved town ? one practice inquired with said this is common since people move and were happy to do that preferably if all the information is provided

As someone who has terrible crooked teeth (parents couldn't afford orthodontic treatment when I was a teenager) your girlfriend will not regret the decision to get this done. The expense and pain may seem excruciating at the moment but it will be worth it for self esteem reasons alone.
Both of my teenage sons have had braces at a cost of $7000 each. That was an overall fee, which was just as well because the younger has recently had his removed after just shy of 5 years.

That really depends on the individual. I have what could be described as terrible crooked teeth but it has never really bothered me. I have to be a bit more careful with oral hygiene, but it's not an issue once it becomes habit.

For kids it's generally worth getting it done so that they can have a lifetime of benefit from it, but for adults I think each individual needs to make their own independent judgement about how the costs and benefits stack up.
