Withings Activite is certainly expensive.

NZ$776 shipped from Amazon then estimated $90 GST on arrival.

Ouch.

I've been looking a buying one as I run quite a bit. So far at the top of my list is the Garmin Vivoactive.

It's waterproof, looks all right, the battery lasts a decent amount of time and it seems to work well with the iphone. The only downside is you need to wear a strap to get your HR. Although I've read that the accuracy of watches with built in HR monitors are not that great.

Been well pleased with my Fitbit Surge - has definitely got me moving and running again, battery life is good, it seems accurate, HR works well, the metrics and gamification are pretty engaging.

Yes it isn't overly attractive or discreet but IMHO the competition isn't either - unless you go with a non-GPS model like the Charge HR or Jawbone etc.

As others have said, it is water resistant (IP4) but not water proof or submergible.

It does seem a bit of an omission not to make it useable for swimming etc.

Agree it would be the icing on the cake if it were fully waterproof, but as a non-swimmer, it wasn't a deal breaker for me!

I don't know if there is something about the current functionality (HR sensor maybe?) which precludes it from being easily waterpoofed, or whether [cynicmode] they are merely saving that for the MKII version...[/cynicmode]

My heart leans toward the Activité but the brain says Surge...

Fitbit make purchasing a lot easier too....

You can find the Fitbit Surge at MightyApe (Geekzone link). Same price as Dick Smith and I think even if you buy on Amazon the price ends up being similar, so better buy locally.

The pebble is fully waterproof, has a weeks battery.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Apparently it doesn't make a difference what you get, they don't work based on accuracy of measurement, just by nagging you and making you feel guilty about taking the lift instead of the stairs.

True, but no GPS or HR monitoring...

Horses for courses I guess.

Are you saying that they are not accurate or that the accuracy is irrelevant in their efficacy as catalysts for fitness and activity?

Both, if you wear two devices they won't agree, and all they need to do to be effective is be a reminder to take the healthy option more often than before.

I've emailed Withings to ask what the easiest way to buy in NZ is, as their own site doesn't seem to allow it.

I had a Nike+ sports watch and it lasted 12 months before the non replaceable strap got brittle and broke, the same thing happened with all of the Polar watches I've owned - I highly recommend you look for something that uses a replaceable band.  The Nike has GPS but the battery would only last a max of 8 hours of activity with GPS and a bit of a waste of time if you ask me.

I've got a pebble now and it's great, I've always used runkeeper for tracking activity and it works really well with the pebble.  The battery life of the pebble is good at about a week and it is waterproof - I swim with mine on 3 times a week however if you hit the lane ropes the strap comes off because the clip is spring loaded also note that the original pebble is meant to be scratch resistant but I've found it scratches easily however most scratches do buff out OK.

My wife has the vivofit and she likes it but finds its step counter inaccurate.

fizzychicken: I have a Fenix 3. Love it to bits. Can't speak for iOS though as I only use it with android or the main wifi/pc

Do you not find it a bit, well, large?

I like it, even though it has many things I would probably never use, but it looks enormous on all the wrist shots I have seen.
