The upper thoracic part was replaced with Dacron - and whilst doing it (as an emergency admission) they found out that I had a bicuspid aortic valve, because they had sliced off the aorta at the valve and could therefore see it! They decided on the spot to do a valve replacement on the basis that they'd already split my chest open and stopped my heart so leaving it to come back later would be silly.

That lot took them 8.5 hours and they decided that the remaining dissection they would leave, especially as it heads down towards where the aorta splits and that is apparently a complex area to fiddle with. They send me for CT scans periodically and the vascular consultant reviews them to see if there has been any change - so far, 10 years down the line, there never has been.

Yikes some things even stents can't touch. Sounds like arch problem. Let me let you in on something. If you ever need an operation make sure it is done in a "high volume aorta centre" and not in a "low volume centre". And even then there is usually one guy who does most of it. I'm not familiar with NZ but using my limited maths that means there is only one guy in the whole country who you want to go to.

Edit: if not an arch problem, you're in luck :) not much else that a $50,000 custom stent graft cannot fix :)

Since I've started my weight/fat loss, I have a weekly weigh in when I get up on Saturday morning after I have gone to the toilet
I believe it tells me by best result.

On a Friday evening, just for fun I also tend to weigh myself
Generally I am between 1.2 and 1.5kg heavier than I am in the morning - though I have been up to 3kg heavier at times and by morning have either lost weight from the last weeks reading (or as the case is at the moment, stayed the same)

As I am however also going for fat loss, I am also measuring my waist where the majority of my "gut" is currently located.
While my weight has not moved in the last couple of weeks, I have continued to loose my waist line and in the last 2.5 months have lost 10cm with 1cm in the last 2 weeks

I started at the Gym recently and where as I have lost a lot of fat, built a lot of muscle I have not lost any weight, in fact I am 1.5kg heavier that I was when I started.

As for the difference, I drink between 2-3 litres of water a day, so that can be a difference of 1ltr (kg) depending on the day.

Overall I have changed my focus to how I am feeling not my weight, I am feeling fitter than at any other time in my life, and my all accounts looking better too.

When you're admitted by ambulance with flashing blues and twos and they clear an entire cardiac theatre and bring in doctors from home to deal with the operation within a couple of hours of your arrival at hospital, they rarely ask you which surgeon you would prefer....! wink

If by arch you mean the tip part of the aorta where it comes out of the heart and bends to go towards your feet, then yes that is the bit that is now plastic..!

When an operation is planned you could technically choose who does it.
When it is an emergency whoever is there gets to work.
Sounds like you are in luck. They are leaving the rest alone as the few important bits around the area affected is too important to alter while everything is holding together. If the balance changes, custom stent graft courtesy of the tax payers it is :)

[OR perhaps they can't now, but technology gets further and eventually they can make better things that can]

It was done by a very nice man called James McGiven, who based on the evidence I can recommend as competent!

Geektastic: Got on the scales Monday. Great result.

Got on the scales today, having not exceeded 1800 calories on any day this week or walked less than 9.1km per day on any day and GAINED 1.1kg.

How does that happen?! A few points of a KG I could put down to any number of things, but over 1 seems like a lot.

It's definitely water fluctuation.

Unless you believe that the walking has added a kg of muscle to your calves. :-)

1Kg I about a litre of water, or put another way two and a bit glassfuls. For myself I use the Aria scales with my Fitbit - it has a very basic body-fat sensor and has the benefit of storing the results so I can see them in the Fitbit application.

Sounds like the OP had an ascending thoracic dissection which are usually repaired surgically as can involve the aortic root where the coronary arteries originate or the root of the aortic valve, or extend to the arch to involve origins of carotid/subclavian arteries.

Stenting is usually only option in descending dissections.

Few questions:

1. What food do you eat?

2. How often do you eat in a day?

3. Do you do a cheat day?

4. Do you eat salty food?

5. Do you drink alcohol? How often?

6. Are you in medication at the moment?

7. If you're drinking protein shake, which one?
