I've broken a few bones, a piece of bone breaking off my elbow mid golf swing was probably the most painful thing. Second was a "dry socket" about a week after having a wisdom tooth out. Basically the little blood clot falls out of the hole and the nerve or bone is exposed. I knew something was wrong when I noticed that I was almost out of the prescribed painkillers (first couple of days there was almost no pain at all). I couldn't sleep, then had a 7 hour drive for work and it felt like my head was on fire from the jaw out.
Remarkably all it took was a visit to a dentist who nicked the side of the gum to make it bleed and stuff it with gauze.
But compared to some others on here it sounds like a walk in the park.

I've had kidney stones 3 times. The first time I BEGGED my wife to kill me and she had to restrain me from climbing out a window of the apartment building we were in at the time.

The last time I had them I caught a taxi in the middle of the night to the hospital. I tried to walk into the hospital and fell flat on my face.

I've also had 20+ years of lower back pain, which occasionally has been so bad that had I of been able to, I would have ended myself to relieve the pain.

Before you think I'm a wuss, I had an operation on my foot which lasted an hour. They didn't administrator the drugs properly and I just gritted my teeth for the last 45 minutes of it.

Hell man 3 times bugger that. Yup I thought I was going to die it was so painful , pacing up and down trying to make sense of the pain. Then to see the end result and its WTF that caused that amount of pain.

When the pain first started it was like I need to get to hospital and now, I normally put going to the doctor off. When I arrived at a&e all doubled up and screaming in pain she looked at me and said you look like you are going to be giving birth to a stone.

This thread has reminded me that I have in fact had many extremely painful events in my life.
Burns, car crash, operations etc.
But the most painful was the anesthetic delivered into my face via a really big needle before having a skin cancer removed.

My wife had called ahead (We have little kids so she stayed with them at home. She is a doctor and gave them likely diagnosis over the phone. They wheeled me into ER where there were people screaming in pain and I asked what had happened to make them carry on like that, she said I was the 4th admission of stones they had that night.

She asked me how bad the pain was on a scale of 1/10 and I said 7. She just laughed and said "stoic much?!"

I nearly cried with relief when the morphine hit me. ( I have a very high drug tolerance to boot).

For me it was sciatic nerve pain from a disc prolapse - I had the pain for 6 months before I had surgery (which removed it instantly). In those 6 months I couldn't sit down, standing was slightly less painful and lying down wasn't any better, I pretty much just had to pace around all day. In those 6 months I averaged about 2 hours sleep per night, I'd pass out around 4-5 am from exhaustion - usually on the floor because for some reason the pain subsided a bit if I was lying on the floor instead of something soft. By the end I was wanting to chop my leg off from the pain (even though I knew it wasn't really in my leg). It would have only been a 3 month event but about the week before I was due for my op the pain started to subside a bit and I figured that if I could avoid someone cutting open my back and tinkering with my spine I would, and then 3 weeks later it bulged again and the pain went into both legs and then I had to go through the exercise of waiting to see the orthopaedic surgeon, wait for an MRI (which showed the prolapse to be as big as they get) and then wait for a surgery spot to open.

Not a fun 6 months of my life, this also happened when my first-born was 8 months old so my wife had it pretty tough too. I've got to say that the ACC was awesome and being self employed they saved me big time - we have the best system in the world. Look after your back people, and be careful when lifting stuff!

Probably when I had a head on with a car when I was on a Motorbike at age 14 smashed my knee cap in half and peeled a chunk off the bottom of my foot, My knee was up to the size of a rugby ball with swelling and my uncle stitched the flap of skin back on with fishing line he did a good job I don't even have a scar from where it was

Presso: So unfortunately on xmas day my partner took a fall (no drink involved) and broke her ankle in 2 places. She is currently at home with her leg up (and i am on beckon call) and we have to wait for the swelling to go down before they can operate where they are going to place in two plates one either side.
Anyway she is in considerable pain with it at the moment which they have given her pain relief for which seems to being working ok for her.
It got me to thinking what is the worst pain I have ever felt and for me it would have to of been kidney stones. OMG I cannot even describe the pain it was so intense.
I was given constant morphine to try and dull it down and at one stage I was given Ketamine and hell that took the pain away for a short time my god that is a trippy pain relief.
I had to wait for 6 hours before they could give me a scan to see how big it was and turned out it was not quite big enough and I had to wait for nature to take its course. A lot of morphine and time later it finally passed. Never ever want to go through that again.

Whats the worst pain you have ever been through.

oh yeah, kidney stones wouldnt wish them on worst enemy. Had them a few times too small to operate and 3 to 4 days on drip in hospital they pass. morphine did nothing for me. cant remember if it was vultaren injections or the pethedine. First time wondered what hit me it was so bad.

Rappelle: Yowzers that doesn't sound good. Most pain I've been in was after pilonidal sinus surgery..

i had that done about 14 years ago and i didnt find it that bad

a year ago i rolled my left ankle, which intern lead to a dislocated left knee cap, and that lead to a torn patella tendon. That was about a month of sleepless nights as i could just not get comfortable, huge difficulty in going anywhere, inability to go number 2's without help, having a shower was a right PITA as we have a shower bath and getting in, wish we still had the old shower.

Its one of the worst knee injuries you can do, and im still not back to 100%. may still need another operation to remove some odd bone regroth where the stitches were.

Snapped crutiate ligament for me, felt like someone had just hammered an 8" nail right through my knee. Closely followed by Windows Vista and kids.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
