While there is most certainly a great deal of fraudulent alternative medicine around, there are also many things which do work at least partially. For example I've used colloidal silver and hydrogen peroxide for many years with great results. I too was very sceptical at first until I had the worst sore throat ever, tried OTC medications and nothing helped. An old friend visited, and convinced me to try gargling ionic colloidal silver which I did. After about 4-5 gargles of it, the soreness and inflammation subsided about an hour later. I recovered from the 2 weeks flu I had at the time in a few days afterward. My theory is that the virus hides in the tissue folds in the throat and suppresses the immune systems action in the mouth, which encourages secondary infections from bacteria, and slows down recovery.

Oh and as for argyria / "blue man syndrome" that is just scaremongering primarily. You would have to ingest enormous amounts of colloidal silver for years, at the wrong colloid size for this to occur.

Just my ten cents.

I remember seeing a big promotional campaign for a colloidal silver product a few years ago and something about it just didn't feel right so out of curiosity I decided to dig deeper. After a day's research I managed to trace all the testimonial and expert witness links back through several shell companies to just three individuals in the USA with phony degrees, all of whom were clearly scam artists and all of whom were giving each other references. It is interesting to see where these things lead sometimes.

The Skeptics Dictionary is another useful resource for this kind of thing.

Yeah that's one of the problems with relying on testimonials for sure. Personal anecdotal experience also counts though. Before I try something new in the alternative medicine category which is lacking "scientific information" I will usually infer possible truth from as many sources as possible, then proceed to try it for myself after weighing up the possible risks.

Do nothing works!

Every time I get [insert many kinds of sickness like cough, fever, flu, cold, back pain, toe pain, backside pain, etc] I do nothing, and in a couple of days, sometimes the next day I get better! Unfortunately I have to pay myself so much money to get this treatment. PM me I'll give you my bank account.

Although there was that one man called Steve Jobs ... well, he didn't make it. I guess it was his time.

Ah the traditional kiwi male health model. That tends to work well for most of us until around 40-50 years then it starts killing us : (.

Yep. His biographer has been fairly clear that Steve regretted some of those choices.
