Found this which makes the Garmin option a bit more compelling.

Although I could not see it on the ANZ NZ website anywhere. Perhaps my Google Fu is lacking...

Here's something a bit more official on the Aus side - https://mobilepayments.anz.com/garmin-pay/

I asked ANZ NZ about it on Twitter, sending them that link a week or so back. Deathly silence.... But surely it must be on their radar.

I have a Samsung S3 Frontier and find it pretty good for running.  Note I'm usually on treadmill.

As well as the heart-rate and step/distance counter what I like about it is you can upload some music to the watch and use it directly with bluetooth headphones.

I just had a look at my tweet to ANZ, I actually forgot to tag them in it so they can't be blamed for not responding. I've tagged them in a new one.

Just an update to this thread. I ended up buying the Garmin Fenix 5 Sapphire edition Tri-HRM bundle when it was on sale at Noel Leemings. It has a bewildering array of data, settings, options etc and still working my way through it. Am thoroughly impressed by the build quality and general use of it sofar.

If there are any Garmin users that want to connect, send me a PM. Same for any mapmyrun users laughing

I have to say I do like the fitbits especially with in-built GPS (had a surge some time back). Also having on board music is a huge plus just for going to the gym/run.

I'm late to the party, but just some advice: I love the Fitbit ecosystem (apart from the lock-in) but their hardware quality is just terrible. After the fifth Charge HR I went through in less than 8 months (+3 Flexes before that) I threw in the towel and bought an Apple Watch.

I had the same experience, but moved from TomTom to Apple Watch. The Apple Watch has a few software issues, but I can't fault the quality of the hardware.

I'm waiting for my Ticwatch S to be delivered. I've had a Garmin Vivoactive (original square black one) for a few years now and it'd been ok without setting the world on fire. It works well as a step counter, watch and GPS tracker, just not so brilliant at the smart watch side of things. The battery life is superb though.

It'll be interesting to see how Android Wear compares.

@HcoNmeM I saw one of those yesterday. It looks amazing. The screen definition puts my Garmin 235 to shame.

It's a great device, much better than the Gear S2 Classic (I had previously)..

Bigger screen also.. so feels like a watch now.. worth the money IMO..

I went for a run for the first time with my Ticwatch S today.

Not having to take a phone was awesome. I had a podcast downloaded and it was great paired with my Meizu EP51s. I had Strava and Runmore both running (I’m going back through C25K after an Achilles injury) and all the apps ran flawlessly. Having a heart rate sensor is very interesting as well.

I mowed the lawns yesterday and the Ticwatch picked up something that seemed close to right for the step count. My Garmin Vivoactive would not pickup the step at all well when I mowed the lawns.

The screen is beautiful and I’m generally very happy. The only thing that I’m concerned about is battery life. A 50 minute run/walk chewed abou 40% of the battery. I was able to charge it back up this morning while I had a shower etc but it will be interesting to see how I go in the next couple of weeks in Australia and Europe. Hopefully I can get through a normal day without needing to recharge.

For NZD$214 landed if I can get the battery to work for me I’ll be stoked.
