We went all out and got two singles in this range (ours has cordless remotes) https://www.sleepyhead.co.nz/bed/shift

Joined together we have a superking and can control each individually. A bit pricey but don't regret it. As they say.. Sleep is very important, so you may as well be comfortable.

10,000 5 Star reviews for a mattress. One review reads:

"I almost died - There was a fire in my building and I slept through it".

That's hilarious, hopefully will wake up in fire , back on the hunt in the weekend .Own house so will definitely get a king super king slightly too big for the room

Had a good experience at New Zealand Beds in Thorndon.Beds are factory made in Auckland but we picked one up off the shop floor. We have always been Wellington Beds customers but we visited their shop a couple of doors down and felt there was no comparison.

Finding the right bed is a personal thing. Thorndon is good place to start as there are a couple of shops close together.

wellington beds make a latex mattress - its a huge slab of latex with foam and fabric covering.

Weighs a ton, awkward to move but comfy. They seem a bit unusual in that the other players like HN, brownies etc. don't have them (AFAIK).

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

Have beds got really expensive lately or something, 4k+ for a bed WTH? My last bed cost about $1k 10 years ago and is fine, and I thought that was a lot back then. It is a pillowtop Sealy postupedic, and the base is a solid slat one which I made, and it was originally desgned for a futon. When I want a new matress, I just replace the matress and already have the slat base to reuse. I notice some retailers often have 50% off sales, so I wonder if they price them intentionally high so they can give good 50%+ discounts. This seems to be the model many stores are now following in NZ.

The prices are ridiculous, would never pay full price, sleepyhead is on sale every second week, if they had lower prices up front mabey they would sell more?

Looking at a King size instead of queen, was considering super king but was worried about how easy it is to find sheets and duvets for that size

You'll find bedding more readily available in super king than in king size. For one thing, Australian king = NZ super king.

The bed market is expanding hugely, a lot of beds out there are being replaced with larger more expensive mattresses. People are getting bigger and richer. There are more mattress stores now than ever.

In the US there are some excellent mattresses you can get for cheap, Amazon sells some and there is a Silicon Valley startup called Casper backed by Leonardo DiCaprio among others. These new mattresses are better and cost a lot less than what we can get here in NZ. The margin on mattresses can be huge, Consumer Reports in the US did a story that showed a $3000 mattress (so about 6K here) cost about $300 to make! They only have to sell a few a week to turn a profit.

I'd like to upgrade our mattress but can't stomach paying 4 times as much for an old fashioned mattress when I know better things are available for a lot less overseas. If the shipping wasn't so expensive I'd just buy a Casper.

We were going to do this last year - I spend a lot of time sitting/sleeping upright so whilst more exxy was what we wanted... went around all the usual retail suspects (except HN cos' just no) and ended up buying two standard singles that join and a good padded headboard and it's absolutely blimmin brilliant!

We got the best service form Wgtn Beds (in L/Hutt) and what turned out to be a great deal on a quality bed (well, beds) and couldn't be happier or better rested.

But as others have pointed out - we're all different so try out plenty and go with what feels the best for you.

We had our mattress replaced by insurance a few years back, we replaced it with a $9000 RRP Sleepyhead mattress

After 2 years we had big humps in the bed, Sleepyhead agreed to replace it (after attempting a repair), and so we replaced it with an $11000 RRP slightly firmer mattress.

Worst thing ever, Its too hot, it still gets indents. I can't wait for it to die so we can replace it with a simple $2000 mattress.

We have what was a very expensive memory foam mattress.

Despite being absolutely and supremely "comfortable" in terms of firm support with absence of any pressure points, it gets far too hot IMO - even in Chch winters.

Stu1: Time to ditch the rolling down the hill sensation so looking for a new bed. So far have looked at Wellington Beds, big save, Harvey Norman and Farmers. I don't want to spend over 2.5k as last bed spent over 4 and has been a nightmare from day one. I have two top contenders one a tattesfeild from Big Save has all the layers needed dreamfoam, gel ect and has a innerspring system the other is a Sleepyhead from Farmers which is 50% of at 2.4k this one has pocket springs. What is the major difference and what has longer reliability?. I like the pocket spring option as less movement but then heard innersprings better for sore backs . What's the better option pocket or innersprings?

We had a fire a few years ago and had to shift to our other house more or less overnight. The old bed was smelling of smoke, so we went to the Warehouse and bought a Queen size top-of-the-line air bed (not just an air matress) for about $270.

It was meant to be temporary, but in the end we slept on it for 6 months. It was really comfy. It comes with the pump embedded in the top of the bed. If it starts to feel soft you flick the switch for 30 seconds....and good to go.

The key to making great was putting a couple of duvet inners under the fitted sheet. This also prevents cats from putting a hole in the bed. Their claws can't get through two thick layers.

It then felt like a proper bed - not a sheet on inflated plastic. I bought a second one and put in the closet in case we found our bums on the floor at 3am. We didn't.

Thing I took from it was that for about $350 all up you get a good comfy bed you can deflate, roll up, and put in a suitcase if you need to shift quickly and easily. We have a $5000 bed at our main house...and a $269 inflatable bed at the other....and I honestly prefer the inflatable. I doubt I'll buy another big, heavy expensive bed.
