Dunnersfella:
I was a Giro full face helmet guy, but Bell for road and X-Country riding...
You often have a 'Giro shaped head' etc.
Ha ha...I've known people with Giro heads...they simply can't fit anything else.

I am the same with Levi's.
Also with Blood. I can take my own type and nothing else, but I can donate to anyone.

What price does neuro surgery start at?
So then based on this I should spend $1000 on a helmet I use <10 times a year? I mean, it's cheaper than neurosurgery right?
I mean if $180 is the reasonable cost, then ok, if it's going to last 10 years, it's $20 a year.
I wouldn't pay >$150. Safety does not increase by much >$50. The jury is still out on the effectiveness of MIPS on the road. Anything >$50, you are looking at better fit, better ventilation, lighter weight and aerodynamics. Depending on how much you ride and how fast you ride, you might prioritise one over the other. Most mainstream bike shops have helmets that are certified, so you have to really try to find dodgy helmets.
Batman:
the lousy helmets (yes, some bike shops sell them! eg warehouse, bike barn!) are made of very dense polystyrene and you might as well wrap your head around a concrete block and then whack it on things. it hurts!
I suppose this means they don't have the NZ safety standard.

Don't they have an expiry date on them? If they are left in the sun for example, the plastic break down. I know my safety hard hat has an expiry date.
Evo say 2-3 Years. Manafacturers say 3 years, however the consumer watchdog in various places say that with light use, much longer is reasonable. They say if they discolour due to UV Exposure, replace them straight away, but the materials in helmets aren't allowed to degrade due to sweat or normal moisture (It's part of the safety standard).
I've ordered a Giro Chronicle, my wife will likely order the same. Let's see how they go.
Thanks for the advice.
Hovding, but you'll need to go to Europe to get it.
So my Giro arrived. I cannot tell you how impressed I am with the fit. It *actually* hugs my head perfectly. Not too hard, but firm enough I know it's not coming off. I had no idea such a thing was possible. My current helmet sat on my head (so crown to helmet contact) and and then the chinstrap was the only other point of contact.
I am super impressed so far.
