So OPSM told me that they do a PD check when you buy the glasses from them. A standard eye test which they give prescription for does not include a PD check. This all sounds too dodgy and iam surprised no one has investigated this practice

That's completely logical reasoning, and I'm not sure what there actually is to investigate.

There is no reason to do measure PD for a standard eye check as it's nothing to do with eye health and only necessary when you're actually fitting glasses.

Yes PD is essential for a correct prescription, but most glasses sites have their own methods and the numerous apps out there to measure PD are essentially doing the exact same thing as the tablet apps now commonly used by optometrists.

If I pay for an eye exam, I would specify beforehand that I expect to receive a prescription including PD measurement and any other relevant information as part of the service I am paying for. If they want to charge extra for that, fair enough. I can always go elsewhere. But don't be precious about it.

Except there is no reason to measure PD in an eye exam.

I ended up going to specsavers and they used an app to take pic of my face and take the PD measurements. Was very happy with their service and ended up buying the glasses off them (at half the price opsm quoted me)

Good to know it worked out for you. But did Specsavers provide you with your PD and/or a copy of your script?

Note that you can also ask another optometrist to measure your PD - I've done that before, with getting my script from Specsavers and then paying another firm $10 to measure my PD; I was using Clearly, who then reduced my own bill with them by $10 to cover the cost of the PD measurement!

I had an eye test at the University of Auckland's eye clinic in Grafton, they did PD when the examiner pulled the lens device down (I saw the number when they adjusted it and asked about it).
