Aredwood:

I'm surprised that there are apartment buildings in tiny rural towns. Which are both big enough and modern enough that they have their own gyms. Unless that building is actually government related for a hospital, university, etc.

I may have caused some confusion ...

I currently work in Welly and have an apartment there that I stay in during the week.   That building has it's own gym and pool.  I've quit that job and I'm moving to Marlborough to take up a role with a different employer.

I admittedly go to a gym that is a bit more on the expensive side. As I pay $18 per week. But there is another gym that only charges $7 per week if you sign a 1 year contract.

Even if you assume only a 3% rate cost for use of money. It will still take over 17 years to save compared to spending $5000 on your own equipment.

I have also made it my routine to just go to the gym on the way home from work. And I find that I get extra motivation from the other people at the gym, who have the same goals as you.

I have nothing against gyms per se.  I was a gym member for a while before we got the apartment.  It's about logistics.

'On the way home from work' for me will be driving past home by 15km and then driving back again.

Assuming three of those trips per week wouldn't otherwise be required that's ~$75 worth of driving at IRD rates each week.  Or $3,375 per year.

Your alternative is to shift to gravity based exercises/training and then limit the required amount of gear you require.  For example we have Kettle bells, TRX (knock off version) and very limited free weights.  Of course its a big mind shift from traditional weight training, but if its good enough for the army....

sen8or:

Correct, if you set the safety bars at the right height and using good technique, you can safely lower the bar to your chest and press, without bumping the bar on the safeties, but, you can also lower the bar onto the safeties without risk of injury

Thanks.  Those safety bars are much simpler than I imagined.

Kiwifruta:

Make sure to buy a bar of at least 20kg in weight, avoid second hand, and buy quality, a cheap bar can kill you when it snaps and rips through your throat or nose.

Will do.  I dislike cheap low-quality gear as a general rule.

I'd be more likely to go cheaper on the actual weights.

Can anyone recommend manufacturers who build good gear?

I've been looking at Force and York.  I have no idea if they are any good to use, but they look structurally sound.

Also is a cage the same as a 'power rack' and is it worth having a lateral pull down bar?

I can recommend these guys;

https://fitnessandleisure.co.nz/

I've bought a bit of stuff off Adrian for our work gym - the superbench and attachments are handy, space saving and have taken a hammering from our work team.

I'm also really keen on the adjustable dumbbells and kettlebells due to the amount of space saved over a tradition dumbbell/kettlebell set.  I haven't got these or used them but it's the way I would go if I was setting up at home.

I haven’t dealt with these guys but they seem like the real deal,http://www.industrialathletic.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwgabeBRBuEiwACD4R5hI3kfxaqBjZ3FQdDkJV3hkqK18a6mzYCD_pk9GWJGFUx88GVK0T8xoCLV0QAvD_BwE

When I was competing there was an outfit in Auckland that made strength related equipment, I’ve been googling around but cannot find them. The owner/designer was either a power lifter or strongman competitor.

Honestly man, I go to a gym. Mainly because I enjoy the atmosphere, they have every single piece of equipment. And I love the classes.

However if you are interested in anything for weight training just buy a rack, and a barbell with weights and a bench.

theres about 6-7 exercises that really work you well. (and they are the most dreaded)

1) Squat, (Barbell)

2) Barbell Row

3) Overhead Press

4) Deadlift

5) Bench Press

6) Chinups/Pullups

All of these are compound exercises. And will work a large amount of muscle groups. Dumbells are great for toning in areas, but if you want to get strong in my opinion all you need is a barbell, bench and rack

This looks good to me - https://fitnessandleisure.co.nz/Classic-Combo-Rack-Bench-Bar $1590 for a good quality rack and bench with bar.

* cage vs power rack - power racks usually have things like the lat pushdown option, cables (for pulls), etc..  A cage is usually just that, a cage that can be used for bench, squats, etc.  If your keen enough, get a squat rack (which just holds a barbell and is much smaller; however you have to be more confident in your ability to re-rack equipment)

* is it worth having a lateral pull down bar - to me yes; you get to work the back and they can double as a lat pushdown exercise, which is great for strengthening the lats for dead lifts etc.  Plus (depending on the design) you can use it for face pulls etc.

Here's a good article - https://garagegymplanner.com/power-rack-vs-squat-stand/
