That prompted me to post a link to a paper I read recently:

Overall, the present research shows that acetaminophen reduces empathy for the pleasurable experiences of other people. These findings not only constitute an important step forward in our understanding of the affective mechanisms underlying the experience of positive empathy but also raise concern about the societal impact of excessive acetaminophen consumption.

TDLR:

They still don't really know how paracetamol works, but it appears to make you disassociate from / "lose empathy for" your own pain.  But that also makes you lose empathy for others.

So, even the most widely used "painkiller" is psychoactive, the impact measurable and significant enough to raise concern about the impact on society of excessive use.

I live 24/7 in pain and often severe pain, it is taking an increasing toll on me and at times a scary desire to stop and get out. Pain like this destroys quality of life and makes ones existence a constant battle to cope. The opponents of cannabis say that the drug will be harmful and addictive but so is Tramadol, Morhpine and all its cousins. I cannot see how cannabis could be anymore dangerous. They say cannabis could be life threatening, it could not be more life threatening than the presence of constant and severe pain. The ever present pain threatens my life yesterday, today and probably tomorrow.

It is time our useless legislators extricated their digits,  allow the use of cannabis and allow the medical professionals manage this as they are trained to do so and give quality of life or the chance of quality of back to so many people.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Agree.

Cannabis and its separate or combined components should be allowed to be another bullet in the arsenal of pain management to name one reason for its legalisation. Just like opium and its separate or combined components. But unlike opium, cannabis, IMO, is far saver and has more diverse beneficial uses beside pain alleviation; anti-nausea and increased appetite, anti-spasmodic and anti-epileptic, safer calmative and sedative, to name a few.

Just Google: Dupont and cannabis, great reading all about the "demon weed"

Two 737 Max planes crash over a five month period and all 737 Max planes are grounded as a consequence.

The equivalent number of people of a fully laden 737 Max die every single day in the (good ol') US from opiate-related overdoses, yet they appear to care little about it.

... and interesting fact. The US accounts for around 5% of the world's population, yet they consume 80% of the world's legal opiate production.

WOW. The American hypocrisy just keeps growing.

We have a cannabis thread for this but I agree 1000% with the above. I suspect that the problem is that the defenders of public morality spent so many years and so much money battling reefer madness that they now cannot just throw in the towel and admit it was all a terrible stupid mistake so they are clinging grimly to every last possible delay tactic they can to justify all those years of pointless hysteria and massive wasted resources.  Instead of just letting go and saying they were wrong, they let slip a little then tighten their grip again and say, okay, maybe we were a teensy bit wrong about that, but what about this? And on and on an on while people in pain continue to suffer and wait. It's hard to admit you are wrong, isn't it, straight people?

But, but, but, if weed is made legal what would all those DEA, FBI and god knows how many other three letter acronym agents do for work? Not to mention all those prison guards in pissant towns across the USA.

The problem with Parliament is that screams and tears aren't heard in the Beehive.

Parliament don't feed on screams and tears.

Rather, they run on money. This is how it works :

They first look for something called evidence, and as this mysterious evidence usually come in two sides depending on which expert you ask, have the opportunity to cherry pick the evidence they want, that fits into their budget, or if it doesn't, that pays itself forward to win the next election. When they want the public to feel they've got a say, they hold a referendum but it doesn't seem to change anything once they have their minds made up.

Wouldn't illicit drug dealers love it if the penalty for doing something evil, like manufacturing and knowingly selling highly harmful addictive drugs, was to only pay back a small proportion of the profits made.

So while it seems like good news, it'll probably be written off as a normal cost of operating that business.

J&J was not so long ago prosecuted for selling known to be defective hip implants - cost them US$2.5 billion in settlements.

As if they'll cough up that money willingly. A whole tribe of grubby lawyers will be popping the champagne corks over the anticipation of all the endless appeals that will follow...

I heard on RNZ tonight that J&J's share price went up after the verdict was announced - thanks to the penalty being so much lower than that sought by prosecutors.
