I suspect based on risk in NZ it will be a simple mask , its not an emergency room with confirmed Covid patients spluttering over everyone.

I guess it partly comes down to whether we should all be acting like we all have COVID or not. I don't think customers will be asked to wear a mask when getting their hair cut, because the one the hairdresser is wearing should potentially protect both people, as long as it is a proper type..Maybe they will be told not to talk, and to keep the mouth closed. The thing about hairdressers I have found, is  often can't stop talking, as it is often a place where gossip spreads.

It will be interesting to see how they do it, and I suspect some customers may choose their hairdresser based on the PPE they use and how safe they feel. I certainly will be. I have caught a cold from a hairdresser before in the past, so it is something that I know is a potentially high risk activity .

But personally I think it is common sense that everyone should be wearing some form of mask when out, to partly to make it socially acceptable. Also all Asian countries that have been successful in getting case numbers right down, all use masks in public.  This is also the recommended opinion of some NZ health experts on this.

I would have thought any salon wholesaler would be a good place to start with, they should at least have an idea of what is required.

Since the masks aren’t compulsory, how about a face shield instead of a mask? Easy to wash down and reuse.

PPE including masks will be compulsory for hairdressers. Was confirmed on newshub tonight.

This is also an interesting story https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-52529820.

I think in the media conference the PM said they would be proving details on PPE and suppliers for them for hairdressers . But I think it would need to consist  of aproper mask that seals around the ace, and without a front valve, and not just a 'cloth mask' . Also eye protection. Plus perhaps front protection to the body to protect clothing. In China they were using more basic full coverage  hazmat suits to cut hair as a precaution. The risk for anyone cutting hair IMO is quite high if the virus is in the community, because just a customer coughing and talking, they could breath it in, or it could get onto their eyeballs.

You forgot to tell them to wear a condom

Did the contact tracing tell you this or was it your forensic analysis of the RNA?

Do you mean like the hairdresser dressed in the blue condom  in Jakarta on this page? Every single surface covered.

To the OP, JAs facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/jacindaardern/ , this evenings live chat at home, she specifically discusses Hairdressers, and discusses that  surgical masks should be able to be sourced, and that they would probably need changing regularly.

Former hairdresser here:

1. Capes/towels - you'll need to up your supply. Assuming you own the salon. If not, they'll have to up the supply. They can't be simply reused on each client.

2. Masks - almost impossible to function with masks on the clients. You'd have to touch then to move them out of the way while cutting/colouring/drying etc

3. Gloves - should have a plentiful supply of those, but cutting in gloves is HARD. Get ones that fit tight and try not to cut them. Also  - biff them out when finished each client (obvious but you'd be amazed what gets reused in a salon)

4. Sterilising the chair/bench/equipment between each client - that's going to get tiresome really quickly...and you'll need loads of disinfectant, paper towels and a bin that seals

Not an industry I'd like to be in Post-COVID...it's going to go through a lot of changes and none of them are going to make life easier for the poor hairdressers (who already get paid less than they are worth and have terrible working conditions).

Still waiting further official advice around PPE.

I suspect it will be mask for hair dresser but not for client since it would be in the way.

Talking to my partner it sounds like gloves will be very difficult to cut with, so unless made compulsory will probably have to make do with frequent hand washing and sanitising.

Have been stocking up on capes so there is enough for a full day and wash them all at night.

Masks from the salon suppliers are cheaper than chemist, but still more than you’d pay online for the same thing. Something like $20 +GST for standard surgical type mask pack of 10.
