Yeah, I'd probably want a swim spa if I ever went down this route, though no chance I'd do it without Solar and Battery installed.

Thanks guys.  A lot of useful info in both this and the other thread.

My mrs isn't quite so keen on my $5k+ experience.  We are going to try and rent a air bnb to see if it's for us.  I am envious of everyone's bush lined deck.  I have spent a decent amount of time in the bush and that sounds much nicer than watching 747s come into Christchurch airport like I can from my back yard.

I am a little put off by the cost and complication of chemicals.  I am wondering if what I really want is a hot tub (i.e. no jets) that you fill occasionally and heat from a fire or gas.  Pros and cons either way.  I think it comes back to trying one.

On a related topic I am going to give this a go on friday:

You would need a mighty battery to run something like that for any length of time I imagine!! Like Tesla car size.

E3xtc:

We just (1 month ago) grabbed one from Alpine Spa's (hit me up if you want a referral bonus); its amazing (still probably in the honey moon period tbh). I had my doubts initially, but since we have had it installed we have used it between 2-4 times a day. Its a wonderful way to melt the pains and thoughts of the day away. We spent marginally more than we had thought to get one with more advanced filtration and better insulation.

Ours too is on a deck among the trees and can echo that, at dusk/dawn its an amazing experience to listen to the forest waking. We had the builders come in and pull up some of the decking to install some more supports (minimal cost for piece of mind)

What does the bonus get us? 😎

A chemical pack (4kgs + pack of test strips) and a pair of wine glasses and a bottle of wine. Useful but certainly nothing to die for :D

I've just put one in. Overseas holiday cancelled so put the money into something else.

First the hidden costs. Had to put a reinforced concrete pad down for it to sit on.

Then I had to put the power in. Spa has two pumps so it was 25amp. A bit tricky getting it out of the house and underground to the spa location.

A $15k spa is now around $22k.

But so far its getting a bit of use. Kids are using it about 4 - 5 times a week. I'm a trail runner so its gets used after sunday long run - a long hot soak is just great. I'll use it on Friday night and saturday - not much time during rest of the week.

Havent seen running costs yet. I doubt I can run it on an oily rag.
