My wife recently got her first glasses at SS Jville mall.

As an onlooker, the service seemed ok to me. She's reasonably satisfied with her glasses but one comment I would make is that their selection of frames seemed limited. If you want the $99 deal you will be limited to the Nana Mascouri collection.

Even the more expensive frames were not great.

Thanks so much for all the responses!

Anyone here use the Wanganui store?

Also, will they fit new lenses to your existing frames?

I’ve just got new specs from Whanganui Specsavers, and the service was good.

They do fit new lenses to existing frames. However, the special offers don’t apply, so it’s not always cost effective. In my case, it was actually more expensive for me to get new progressive lenses fitted than it was to buy a complete new pair of specs with discounted progressives.

Thanks to all who participated in this topic.

By my count that makes 12 favourable response vs 3 unfavourable. Not a bad score! On that basis this morning I made a booking on line and got an appointment this afternoon.

My experience: The exam was conducted efficiently and thoroughly. The optometrist was pleasant and had good answers for all my questions. She zeroed in on the optimum prescriptions quite rapidly compared to what I have been used to previously. Selection of frames and lens pricing was somewhat confusing due to the different deals on offer, but in the end I was happy with a $499 total charge covering one new set of glasses, and one pair of lenses to be fitted into frames I took along. All lenses are bifocal, without any of the special treatments. Frame selection and measurement for the bifocal line position was unrushed and I feel confident of a good result. My only negative point is the 2-3 week delivery time for the new glasses. And I would add I don't like the pricing model which starts off with highly inflated prices followed by big discounts. It makes comparisons between suppliers very difficult.

Unfortunately the lenses are made in Melbourne, even for Australian customers. It was 7 days when I lived in Sydney so 2-3 weeks taking into account covid is the norm now. I believe there are no lens factories in NZ due to economies of scale.

All the chains do it. They will also drop a popular frame even though it is popular just because the frame cost has risen. Their in-house frames are on thin margins. They used to stock gold aviator, soft nose with sprung arms which, apparently were very popular and were my frames of choice, but manufacture cost increased so they dropped them ☹️

My wife goes with the AA paying.

Since LASIK I go but less often than when I wore glasses.

I found them good. But found they will try and upsell you on the lenses and frames. I got two pairs, one with a special coating for computer use. But I don't notice any difference at all when using them. But know the coating is there because the lenses look different.

Another vote to give them a go.  We get free exams (AA) and they seem very efficient with the latest high-tech computer gear.  Glasses are reasonable prices and no heavy sales pitches.  If it's free...you have nothing to lose.

I've used them for about 10 years. Haven't had an issue.

Last eye test, my prescription had not changed, so there was no pressure to buy new glasses.

They are happy to email through your prescription if you are looking at buying elsewhere (and I have bought a couple of pairs from 39dollarglasses.com with no issues either). I'm lucky, however, that my prescription is reasonably basic - I only need single vision lenses.

I do find their choice of frames to be a bit limited as I have a wide-ish face so most of their frames look a bit silly on me.

Looks like carrying the cost of AA members is a good business decision.

For the southern cross people, I assume you show your insurance details and SS bill SX directly ?

Just tried Specsavers for the first time, so far a very good experience.

Been going to Specsavers for awhile now, they're good value. Make sure you get a copy of the prescription and then get your glasses for $5 from the Warehouse/Countdown/whatever, or get a decent pair for $69 from Specsavers and spares for $5. I have several $5 pairs all over the place for close-up work so I don't have to worry about where I last put the official pair.

I've got my last 3 (maybe 4) sets of glasses from specsavers and been perfectly happy with them. I tend to get the 2 for 1 frames deal and the value for money always seems decent.

I also go every 2 years for the AA eye exam. I've been to multiple branches across Auckland and always found their service good.

Southern Cross occasionally have free eye exams with SS. Took advantage of this earlier this year, and was happy with the service etc :)

Downside - now confirmed I need reading glasses. Nooooooo.... :D
