NHI number helps load your vaccination into the system. I don't know if they ask for it as optional or insist, since I didn't mind and wanted it loaded against my medical records. When I went today for my second shot I didn't need to show ID, just asked my name.

Just to be clear, everyone in the country is eligible, and ID isn't required.

We do want to make sure people get their vaccination against their record and not someone else's so we have a process to do this. Sometimes with non-english spelling it can be easier if this is written down, this might be why people are asking for ID but they could equally just ask the person to write their name, or do a confirmation check of details we hold. It is probably lazy and not helpful, rather than deliberate.

As an aside, if you have come through the online booking system we have ~90% of the time already matched your details to your NHI.

@jonherries

Is it possible to find my NHI number, or if I even have one? I've been in the country ~5 years but I haven't had to visit any medical practitioners in that time. If I didn't have one would a new one have been issued when I got my first shot and could I ask for that when I get my second?

I can't speak for anyone else but when I got mine they just asked for my name and birthdate. That was all. No ID, no nothing else. With that information they were immediately able to find me in the system. I know because I watched the nurse doing it on a laptop. This was a walk-in, no advance booking.

Exactly the same process for me too.

I do wonder now that vaccine passport / employers that  require proof is coming.  The temptation for fraud is now there.

Example: Someone who does not want to get vaccinated and pays/gets someone else to get jabbed using their details. Thus they registered as being vaxed but have not.

Is that page unmaintained or just out of line with my actual experience. It says:

"If you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, such as cold or flu symptoms, contact Healthline (0800 358 5453) or your doctor to find out if you need a test. If they agree you should be tested for COVID-19, you can get this test from:..."

Last two times I rolled up to a testing centre said "yeah got some symptoms thought I'd get a test". That's all. None of those qualifiers were required.

Typically if you have been to a doctor in NZ you will have a NHI number and that can be found by ringing your doctor or looking at a medication label or prescription.

Its something I wish everyone would do.

If you have never gone to a doctor in NZ then they need to assign a NHI number to you when you get the first shot, this is so they can record the batch and dose etc..

( hence why they want some form of ID just to get the correct name and spelling of it and DOB etc.. right )

If they do assign /find your NHI number please note it down or even put it in your covid app under myData/NHI number

It will speed up any future vaccinations or covid testing that you may require as searching on the system is a pain otherwise

You will be asked:

  • for your name, date of birth and physical address so we can verify this in the COVID Immunisation Register (you do not need to show photo ID)

You can find your NHI number on a hospital letter or prescription, or by calling 0800 855 066.

That's good. It's not clear to me why there was ever any need to mention passports and things like that. I can see there's a desire to get names right, it looks to me like some general guidance around doing that was translated into show one of the above.

The focus needs to be 100% on welcoming people in and assisting them.
