I don't really care what time it is. I just wish it wouldn't keep changing. The difference is only one hour. If that is too much for some people, why not compromise on a half-hour? It works for Australia.

Aucklanders find it hard enough to drive in daylight, the thought of dark mornings all year around is terrifying if you have to commute.

Can't wait for the windows patching required for DST changes, and the constant fear every time the old DST came around checking to make sure servers didn't change times..

At least Apple's unlikely to make it a paid upgrade for the new timezone database like they did in 2007! (And even then, it was a couple of weeks late...)

As someone that gets up early to run I love DST and as my evenings are sucked up by cooking dinner/getting kids ready and to bed the extra time in the evenings is of no use.

You should try living at a beach, the high water time changes everyday. Trouble is King Canute has already shown you can't control it by decree.

I'm not sure those of you up north appreciate what would happen to the southerners if we had DST all year round

Do you realise that in Dunedin sunrise would be 9:20 am in the middle of winter and on cloudy days (all of them that time of year) it would not get light till about 10am. Mix that in with the ice on the hill roads and mothers on the school run....  I don't think so Tim

Perhaps a new time and calendar system, based on tides and the moon instead of the sun, so that every day at X time it's high tide, regardless of whether the sun is up or not. :-)

Ahem...

antonknee:

I'd rather have daylight savings time all year round. If that means the roads are icy in Dunedin at 8am, who cares, people shouldn't live there anyway (tongue firmly in cheek in case that wasn't blindingly obvious).

It's quite hard given our geography and the time difference between say Auckland and Dunedin to really justify moving to summer time all year round, as much as I personally think DST and the flip-flop is stupid.

After I slept on it, I actually think standard time all year round - ie simply removing the switch and operating at GMT+12 all year - is probably the best outcome overall.

If only it were feasible to extend days to 24 hours and 20 seconds while heading into summer, and shorten them to 23 hours, 59 minutes and 40 seconds while heading into winter. After half a year you'd have corrected the time by a little more than a full hour, and there wouldn't be a jarring adjustment for humans.

Pussies. Back in my day we walked barefooted to school and were thankful for the odd still-warm cow patty to thaw out our toes along the way.

And that means no daylight for late evenings during summer months for lounging around the pool (for those that have them) or on the deck, enjoying a cool beverage until late. The middle of summer would see daylight gone just after 8pm. It would be getting dark at about 7pm by now (it's getting dark when I finish watering the veggies just after 8pm).

There's a bit to weigh up, and you're never going to please everyone.

DST as it stands doesn't bother me, and we've never really had trouble with kids adapting through the years (they're adults now).

Whatever happens, most people will get used to it. Doesn't bother me either way.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.
