This should be changed to a general mental health thread. It is good to have and doesn't have to be specifically related to Covid.

Mental health demand during an post Covid has gone through the roof.

There's A LOT of demand to see Clinical Psychologists at the moment with a backlog of appointments for 4-6 weeks.

I just filled in the quiz to see when I can get my vaccination. Looks like May.

I was intrigued by this, which I assume is another way of saying “Are you a criminal in prison?”

“Are you an adult living under the care of the Department of Corrections?”

What does that have to do with Mental Health?

It has to do with Covid 19. Waiting for vaccines certainly affects my mental health.

Prisons are high-risk for Covid - it would blow through them in a heartbeat. It's also an easy population to immunise. Given how many people it takes to run a prison I can forgive the Ministry for treating them as high priority.

It was the quaint euphemism that intrigued me. Why not call them prisoners?!

Because that may offend the offenders...

Does anyone know any activities to keep the mind calm when struggling in todays age?

My work is physical but not enough days/hours per week (self employed) and i tend to drink to much Alcohol as a result of my feelings.

Do you have any interests? Sports you play, or think you'd enjoy?

The biggest thing for me has been ensuring I get out of the house enough. The past 12+ months have been largely work, home, and a few shops to pick up supplies. Recently, after recovering from an injury, I have been able to return to Squash and that has helped, but I have a pretty small universe, and I think that has been contributing to a less than stellar mood from time to time, on top of tons of stress.

We are making a point of trying to get out of Auckland regularly and getting outside more. I am trying to be a bit more social, and despite resisting the urge to stay away from people because... COVID, and spending time out and about in general.

Getting enough sleep, and excercise has helped.

I've struggled quite a bit over the last year or so and with the combination of a changed world and a high-stress job, I have a tendency to be quite wound up most of the time.

I do two things to help:

  1. Participate actively in the "What Annoys You" thread
  2. Mountain Biking

I get out on my bike every week at least once. Often with my kids, but sometimes on my own. It's a great stress reliever.

It's not for everyone, but I enjoy it. I'm not an extreme rider by any means, but simply getting out and riding helps take the edge off.

I don't really drink after a multi-decade period of binge drinking like a good kiwi bloke. I don't find it relaxing.

Consider that one way to keep the mind calm is to distract it away from what makes you worry. If working outside or driving listen to talkback radio or podcasts to focus on other issues rather than your own, it’s a distraction. Keep off Social Media and avoid reading or listening to news that exacerbates your anxiety.

Repeat to yourself often that 'Everything changes nothing stays the same.' This mantra will be a reminder that today won’t be the same as tomorrow and that change is inevitable. It’s a comfort to know this and I’ve used it successfully for many years.

Alcohol makes anxious feelings worse and the addiction grows but the anxiety is still there. Cutting down will make you feel more in control and the health benefits are the best reason.

This booklet helps with ways to tone down the drinking Cutting Down

Lastly, even if you don't feel like it, at least a few times a day, turn your lips up into a smile.
It’s been proven that when you do this, even faked, the brain releases tiny molecules that help fight off stress and also serotonin which is an antidepressant.

It might sound cliche but count blessings instead of woes, there’s so much to be thankful for.
