Note "Animal crossing" requires WiFi. A tablet is easier to play on than a phone.

  • an Android device. JbHifi has a Lenovo tablet at $279.

  • or one of the various Nintendo consoles, recommended Nintendo Switch $530

  • or an Apple device, JBHiFi has a 32GB iPad at $600

ABC News: Coronavirus is forcing friends apart, but games like Animal Crossing and D&D are bringing them back together

Elyce Phillips is in charge of Peachbutt Island.

The island's her little corner of the new game Animal Crossing: New Horizons — which Elyce sums up as a "nice town simulator".

"You get a little deserted island, you set it up with little houses, you get to decorate it how you like and then just chill out," she says.

"It's hard to do when you're busy with life. This dropped at just the right time."

The comedian has had a little more time on her hands lately — coronavirus has meant weeks of cancelled gigs, and physical distancing has made meeting up with friends impossible.

But in the game being social is encouraged. Loved ones are just a short flight (in a plane piloted by a dodo) away.

"I can go visit my girlfriend's island when at the moment I can't actually go, because she's in Tasmania and they're locked off. So it's a handy little substitute for doing visits to people that I can't actually go and see in person at the moment," Elyce says.

The visit can't make up for the real thing, but the connection means a lot when isolated from friends.

I'm really worried about my parents.

They are poorly with conditions that mean covid would be an end-game for them.

They live rurally (100 minutes drive from me) and have to drive a distance to the nearest supermarket.

I thought I would be able to do grocery runs for them but thats not going to be allowed on Lvl4.

I dont want them to starve (they were unable to get all the food they needed as townies ransacked their local) and I dont want them to enter any supermarket either. They are rubbish at bio-hazard protocols.

They have 2 neighbours, one is off his face on drugs all the time, the other is a nice family but she is a school teacher with young school-aged children. They havent been self-isolating long enough to not pose any risk yet.

I didn't sleep at all last night. Spent half of it trying to think of solutions for them and the other half crying because I couldn't think of any.

My husband thinks I'm being dramatic, so I have no one to help me process all this.

I live alone and I don't have a car. I have a couple of health conditions.

I am worried about the unknown factor with this virus, but I'm not panicking.

Try calling or texting 1737. If you feel that you or someone's life is in immediate jeopardy, call 111, no matter what others say.

    From covid19.govt.nz

"I’m feeling stressed, who can I talk to?"

If over the following days and weeks you feel you are not coping, it’s important to seek help and professional support. Your family doctor is a good starting point.

For support with grief, anxiety, distress or mental wellbeing, you can also call or text the 'Need to talk?' service on 1737

    (At 8 pm, I was on-hold for 12 minutes)

This service is free, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and gives you the chance to talk it through with a trained counsellor.

Will the supermarket deliver? Could you place an order on line?

@kiwifidget could you do a click and collect online order for their nearest supermarket? They'd still have to go to the supermarket, but wouldn't have to be wandering around inside the shop to get their stuff. Alternatively perhaps contact grey power or similar in their area and they might be able to put you in touch with someone who can help with delivery.

EDIT: Countdown have extra services available for elderly or ill people that might help

    Thanks for the ideas.

Delivery is not an option as they live outside the zone.

But I will look into click and collect, does countdown do that?

@kiwifidget yes Countdown do pick up. Go to https://shop.countdown.co.nz/ and select pickup from the menu at the top left.

Once you have an account set up, go to https://shop.countdown.co.nz/shop/content/priority-assistance to register them for the priority service for elderly.

Had a call from a friend who work in the banking sector. My friend pretty much having anxiety/panic attack because it's the first time learn to work from home, so plenty to learn about during this uncertainty time

The leader of the team told the group of the people working under him, if the whole group can't perform and they will be in the chopping block. What a stupid way to threaten the staffs during this time, giving them more stress and anxiety.  It's not a way to solve problem.

It's just the first week, everyone pretty much start from zero and learn. Everyone is not perfect, people takes time to learn and adapt this situation right now.

I hope my friend and colleague able to talk to higher hierarchy about this incident.

If you holding higher position and lucky to have a job right now, please do not threaten your staffs about unemployment.

@kiwifidget I would have suggested you see if you can get approval to go and do shopping for them, and drop it off in a no-contact kinda way, but that's a loooooooong way away.  Is there a friend or relative that is closer that could do this for them?

    @pinkydot that's pretty crappy, I agree. :(

There are some real dicks out there. Threatening inexperienced workers to get it right, or you're fired, is not right.

I've been in IT since 1980's, so probably not the best to talk to people just starting with remote work.

A safe tip, that won't get you in trouble, is set up a pair of speakers on your laptop. You can use Windows to make a sound when you get an email, and (usually) with most "IP" phones, like Skype. Turn that suckers up loud, so if you're in the bathroom you can hear it.

What they're most likely to struggle with is "two form authentication," which is a (necessary) pain even for experience remote workers, and for the infrastructure team alike. Idle detection makes this doubly a pain.

I'll share a trick, that's exactly what you shouldn't be doing, and could get you disciplined.

They'll notice that on most remote connections, it'll drop if it goes "idle": no keystrokes or mouse clicks for a number of minutes, somewhere in the range of 5 to 15 minutes.

Microsoft's store has "MoveMouse" which jiggles the mouse. Installing this software is detectable (usually) by the system admins, and again could get you fired. I've used it for years, at sites much more secure than banks, and never been dinged. I have it send a "PrtScr" every x minutes, which is enough to fool the client.

Note if the sysadmin have an application whitelist this won't work. Again there are devious ways around this, because even highly secure sites are too busy to do 100% best practice, but install at risk to your job if caught.

If you want to be even more tricky, and much harder to detect you can purchase a hardware based "mouse jiggler" on eBay. This is very hard to detect., but not impossible.

Note if the sys admin disabled the USB ports, this won't work. No software (should) be installed on your PC, but I have heard of unscrupulous hardware companies installing nasty software when a "mouse jiggler" is plugged into a USB port.

I'm not responsible if you get fired. So are you feeling lucky, punk?

@dynamic : all their friends are in the same boat as them really, old and vulnerable. And I am the closest relative. I am encouraged about the click and collect so I hope I can sleep tonight. Thank you.

Can you buy your groceries online?

I'm not keen on entering a supermarket while we are on level 4.

I have a chest freezer almost filled to the brim with food and plenty of food in the pantry, but there are 6 mouths to feed. Fortunately I can continue working at home on full pay.

I was planning on going spearfishing and gathering shellfish to supplement our storage but those have been ruled out.

I do feel for your friend, it's not easy and bank employees (I used to be one) are treated as disposable rented assets. I hear good things about the Green bank as an employer, the Yellow one is nice too. I wouldn't work for a bank managed from Australia again.
