Today is the end of week 4, so my eighth 36 hour fast. I have to say I haven't found the fasting that difficult, I've felt a little hungry at times, but haven't felt starving at any point.

I assume this is due to doing keto the other 5 days. If I understand how it works: by eating a high fat low carb diet your body adapts to burning fat for fuel as the default, so when you stop eating it's much easier for your body to switch to burning stored fat (rather than craving carbs). I'm not a dietitian, but I imagine that's whats happening.

I've done fasting before, and never found it impossible, but it's never been as easy as it is this time. The only difference is I'm doing keto this time.

Keto is much harder than the fasting for me. I'm not left feeling hungry, it's just there's a lot of food I enjoy that I simply can't have.

MrBob:

what do the scales say?

Week 1 - 3.2kg loss

Week 2 - 2.1kg loss

Week 3 - 0.45kg loss (a bit disappointed by this one)

Week 4 - weigh-in is tomorrow morning, and I'm hoping to make up for last week.

EDIT: Waist measurement going down more consistently at around 10mm per week.

It's normal at week2/3 to have a little stall.

It is your body becoming fat-adapted (changing from burning sugars for energy to converting fats into energy).

Your weight loss (depending on how much you've got to lose) will start to pick up again (not quite the 2kgs a week level though).

I was the same as you - lost 5kgs in the first two weeks, half a kg the third and then nearly a kilo a week after that for about a year. I was 160kgs, should be about 90, so had a lot of 'easy' fat to burn, and burn it I did.

Like you, I find Keto harder than IF. So many foods I still crave (the crunchy ones usually :))

A little more expensive than chips, but these are pretty good:

EDIT: Congrats on the weight loss by the way - a kilo a week for a full year is bloody good going.

Thanks, It's pretty much about maintenance at the moment for me. I'd like to drop a couple more kilos, but I'm not stressing about it.

The Quest Protein chips are really good too (but expensive). They are quite filling though (being protein).

I think I'll stick to the pork crackle... $5 for 75g is better than $6 for 32g! Less carbs too - but definitely not vegan friendly!

Agreed. That Pork Crackle goes a long way.

The protein chips, whilst expensive, are good enough that one 32g pack will do my wife and I for nachos.

I obviously haven't reduced my portion sizes as much as you have!

Ok, week 4 was a 1.35kg loss, so not bad. I'd made a typo for week 2 though, that was actually 2.0kg.

But I'm pretty happy with 7kg in 4 weeks. If I could keep going at (or above) 1kg per week I'd be very happy.

Awesome results, keep going! After 2 years of doing keto, I slacked during covid and have since regain back some of the kgs I lost... Now trying to go back to the cycle again...

Keto is just a means of weight loss. I speculate it to be a result of cutting out refined foods like flours where the calories are easily absorbed over steel oats for example and cutting out entire food groups meaning cutting out calories.

I eat a whole foods diet, basically meaning not refined or processed/packaged food, roughly 55-65% (I think) carbs and don't have weight issues. I've actually had to stuff my face just to not lose weight.

I heard diet adherence is the most import factor in losing weight.

@RedDinosaur I suspect it is partly genetic, some people do better than others eating the same foods. I do agree about whole foods, I'm on a holistic program now (ie whole person rather than airy fairy) that looks to help restore energy and lose weight that advocates / requires eating mostly whole foods.

I have been doing IF, Keto and long term fasting for the last three years.  I lost 30kg, have never felt better and saved a heap of money by not buying crap food.  I did longer term fasting (multi days, sometimes a week) at the beginning but now I just skip breakfast and lunch every day, try to stay off most of the carbs (I still eat fruit) and I definitely stay away from sugar and food that comes in a packet.

The whole thing feels natural and works well.  If you go to a cafe you just have coffee.  I work from home so I cook dinner for the family every day.  After I cook dinner I eat it + whatever healthy snacks I feel like.

Eating is an addiction so you need to treat it like drinking.  Nobody says the best way to quit drinking is to have six small drinks per day so why would it be the best way to get your eating under control?  That's completely mad and stupid.  Nobody needs to eat breakfast.

I'm not so sure. Ive lost 10kg, 98 to 88. Little has changed in my diet

1. Cut back on snacks but still have snacks, but more healthier options but not always

2. Activity is unchanged

3. I eat same foods as before, but the key is the portions are smaller, that's been the key for me. No annoying diet to worry about, not missing anything. Sometimes I feel like just a small lunch or dinner so I do that, it all helps
