It’s not quite that bad.  I did keto without such a stern approach. You can have some carbs as long as you keep it below a small limit each day - typically less than 50g nett carbs.  You know when you go into ketosis by an initial period of feeling meh and the ketone smell. There’s no real need to test.

 

Some fruits are ok in moderation especially avocados, berries and melons. Most salad greens and non starchy veggies like broccoli and cauliflower are also ok.

 

It is not that hard if you shop for it and eat at home. Plenty of good keto recipe books available too.

I have not done full on "keto" as such, but I have done low carb (Based on the What the Fat book) for a couple of years; Worked well for me, I lost around 35 kgs, though back then I also had time for plenty for exercise too, so that was probably part of it.

 

This thread has inspired me to get back into some of those habits, so chur to the OP :)

The exercise side of the equation seems to have very little impact on me. For about 2 years starting with lock-downs I walked and walked and walked - probably 30-50km a week. It seemed to have minimal impact on my weight but keto lost me about 10kg.

Adore this thread! I'd love to add my personal journey notes in the hope it helps others reading this.

 

Diagnosed with ADHD several years ago now, was placed on meds which effectively suppress my appetite, however I must eat healthily to ensure I pass regular blood tests which ensure the meds are not negatively impacting my health.

 

With the afore mentioned condition I had the benefit of hyperfocus and deep dived into nutrition and gut health research to basically spend as little effort as possible to achieve the best possible outcome. 

 

Off the back of this I'd like to share a few things I do/take which are often overlooked by generally most people.

 

1 - Metamucil fibre pills.

 

It has been scientifically verified to..
Lower your risk of various cancers. (Especially bowel cancer wills 1200 Kiwis a year, this risk is slashed with just a small fibre increase!!!)
Lower your cholesterol levels. (dissolved fat in your blood.)
Induces feelings of satiety. (Different to feel full, but your tummy feels content.)
Lowers risk of constipation.
Lowers your blood sugar levels.
Lowers risk of haemorrhoids.
Increases your gut beneficial gut biome by diversity and higher count.
Help sleep habits like higher quality sleep and falling asleep faster

And all you need to do is take 1/2 metamucil capsules a day. Sucks they're so bloody expensive, but they do work.

2 - Omega 3 supplements.

 

It has been scientifically verified to..
Assist in eye health.
Lowers aggression levels. (!!) 
Increase dopamine levels. (Your happy brain chains.)
Lowers cortisol levels. (Your stressful brain chains.)
Improves memory abilities immensely.
(And generally speaking if you're autistic you're guaranteed to have lower omega-3 intake than the general population, so as an autist this supplement alone has been a phenomenal game-changer in terms of how I am able to operate with a happier demeanour and tolerate more stupid people on a daily basis.)

3 - A good multivitamin (personally Centrum for men).

 

It's generally guaranteed you're not going to be physically be able to consume the amounts of the various food groups which contain the micro and macro nutrients needed for proper cellular function if you're intermittently fasting, e.g. 90g sirloin steak - 3mg. An adult male needs 8mg or iron a day, woman 18mg!) so you must supplement those missing nutrients through another method (pill form).

4 - Protein shakes.

You roughly should have .75g per kg body weight per day of protein for maintenance and a lot more if you're physically active. So personally that around 70-100g a day. 
Again a 90g sirloin is 24g protein, so that's either nearly 300grams of cooked red meat a day or supplement with protein powder and shakes.

5 - Get OUTSIDE! Beside the other benefits you must spend time in direct sunlight 3x times a week for 10-15 minutes to get adequate vitamin D levels.

 

And in case you're not aware of this - Sitting behind a window = ZERO vitamin D generation.
So if you think 'I sit by a window at work, or while I'm driving to and from work, I don't need to go outside' you're utterly wrong.

And there's a LOT more, but these are the key elements which are guaranteed to help you ensure a happy, safe and well balanced Intermittent Fasting/diet journey.

 

But to everyone reading this - Thank you for getting this far, I'll leave you on this:

Just stir it into water and glug it down, it's not great but you get used to it, particularly given it's about and order of magnitude less expensive.

A tablespoon of psyllium husks in water, chugged down does wonders for gut regularity. It's a weird texture, but as long as there's plenty of water involved, it's fine. It also works mixed into cereal or yogurt, etc.
