That Emax oximeter is also on The Market, sold by Snappyone.

That's not very reassuring. Then again buying a $100 from a proper NZ firm might not get anything that's actually any better.

I was working with a professional once. He said the more he charged the more his clients appreciated it, thinking he is providing a better service.

Out of interest has anyone bought their own bottled oxygen and regulator/mask yet? If so any suggestions on suppliers and cost estimates?

Hard to tell what you are buying sometimes.

Going by appearances isnt that reliable either.

The Chinese companies make just about everything these days - and there is also a big market in China that makes very convincing looking knock-offs of Chinese made products.

So you may well see 6 different 'identical' products and find they are all made by different manufacturers and to different levels of quality.

Some Aliexpress sellers also use photos of other products to sell their goods as well.

Still - Its worth trying the $4.72 purchase I suppose - But that is suspiciously cheap. Pity there isn't a way to check their calibration.

no because air has enough oxygen for home isolation.

if you need oxygen and you are not in a hospital, you are not likely to do very well anyway.

doesn't stop people trying though, esp if they have no choice (eg hospital full).

so you are saying since you can't tell if one is actually better than the other, best to pay 10X the price and feel better?

unless you are worried about doomsday apocalypse scenario?

That's what I was thinking.

You can buy oxygen generators on AliExpress for a few hundred dollars. If you're at the point of needing bottled oxygen, then you probably shouldn't be at home.

If you're preparing for the end of civilisaion (arguably already dead), there is a company called Harvest Right in the US that sells home freeze dryers. I understand COVID has boosted their sales quite significantly.

I guess just looking at what happened in India. Spoke with many people there struggling to get their relatives into hospital, people who had relatives die in the room next door as a result etc... Not thinking its as big a risk in NZ but if it pans out bad with the hospitals and you didn't have a $100 oxygen bottle you will be pretty upset if it could have saved your relatives life...

GeekGuy:

When I was in hospital last year, I was always around the 92% mark when the nurses did the 3/4 hourly check.

They just got me to take a couple of deep breaths which brought it back up to a more normal reading when they retested.

Prior to that I was on a "trachy" which is not a pleasant experience.

That was very naughty. It just gives a false positive. If you kept taking deep breaths to keep your SpO2% up you would soon tire and be quite exhausted, which would defeat the purpose of bed rest & recovery.

If they were doing it to exercise your lungs to bring the muscles back up to strength, or to clear your lungs of mucus or to carry out a Pulmonary Function Test, then yes, but not to cheat on SaO2 levels.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

You could look at the price of pulse oximeters two ways. Cheap and cheerful as a just in case scenario for peace of mind or "what is my life worth?" the cost of a hospital grade unit is nothing when my life and those I love is at stake.

If you watch the tech con video, they look to be pretty basic things. I noticed my samsung phone has on in the health app, where you scan the finger on the back scanner, and it seems to work. I knew that it could measure my pulse. The issue though is that it doesn't scan all the way through the finger like  the  dedicated ones so not sure if it is as good..   Readings were quite a bit less when waking up after sleep . Would be interesting to compare the internals of a middle of a middle of the road priced model, with the Rolls Royce priced one. Guessing many of the cheaper ones are just rebadged.

I see your point @Zeon, but I an confident we are further down the track than India was then (and may still be as I m deliberately paying a lot less attention to the news lately).  Double-jabbing should keep most people out of hospital.  The new pill that is coming should significantly relieve symptoms.

.

I ordered one of the OLED screen oximeters a few weeks ago from AliExpress.  Paid about $15 for a model that is $40-$60 on Trademe and was happy to wait a few weeks.  I picked up a forehead/ear thermometer at the same time.  Like many, for me it is a wee helper to keep an eye on just how sick you are and to know if/when hospitalisation is required.  I checked tracking a few minutes ago and it looks like it might arrive today.  If I can think of an opportunity to test it beside one at a medical facility, I will do so and report back.

I did a little research on smartphone-app oximeters, and read several times they were not nearly as accurate as 'look through' models.

@robbyp: the accuracy (or otherwise!) of the phone-based scanners were discussed back on p1 (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=161&topicid=290479); a number of us with that feature available have little faith in its accuracy, and I'm looking forward to comparing it against the unit I've bought from Aliexpress - when it turns up that is!
