Seeing Withings was running a discount during Black Friday I decided to sell my Activite Pop and get the Activite. I really liked the looks of the review unit I had here. Just got a notice from YouShop saying it arrived and cleared customs today so it should be in my hands tomorrow...

Liking the Pop - the sleep tracking is identical to the data from my Sense which is cool.

Steps tracking is cool - gives a good indication on how lazy I am.

The rubber strap is a bit tinny, have a replacement coming.

You can join me on Withings if you want. And I am not lazy - 12k - 14k steps daily, except weekends (have been cycling with Bella lately so I still use my Fitbit Surge then because of the GPS tracking).

good lord, I hit 7-8 on a good day. How are you finding the Steel?

I am in a quandary - I really like the tracking on the Pop, but it isn't a dress watch by any means - it is ok for work, barely. I am undecided as to whether to get a tracker that is a bracelet or something else and wear a normal watch or see if the Steel is dressy enough for my needs.

I didn't buy the Steel, I bought the Activite Classic (Swiss Made, the one with leather strap/sapphire glass). Still like it lots. Reason I bought it as exactly the same as yours: a bit more dress up than the Pop/Steel.

The problem is that my other watch is an Omega Seamaster. To use a tracker on the other wrist is just... ugh. Ideally there would be an Omega smartwatch (like the Tag Heuer now).

I was using the Fitbit for some time. First as a tracker/bracelet, then using the Charge HR and then the surge. Again, none of those are really "watches" and plain ugly.

So the option is Withings for work (and some events) and Omega for occasions...

Oh right - I thought you were going for the steel. The steel might be a goer for me but not sure yet.

I really liked the look of the fossil Q grant: https://www.fossil.com/us/en/q/connected-accessories/view-all/q-grant-chronograph-stainless-steel-smartwatch-sku-ftw10031p.html

along with the new one from CES (Q54 pilot) - even their bracelets look cool. However they only do steps. I am fine with the Activite's lack of HR as it does steps, sleep and swimming.

Paying more for less tracking seems silly. But the Reveler looks cool! https://www.fossil.com/us/en/q/connected-accessories/view-all/q-reveler-black-leather-activity-tracker-sku-ftj10011p.html

e
dit: I also can't be arsed with another app/ecosystem. Withings works nicely with the scale and activity tracking.

Or the misfit ray: http://misfit.com/products/ray

I also brought the Activite Classic after having the Pop for a short while. The Pop was fine but no good for anything smart.

I mostly use the Classic with the plastic strap (3 months now still in good order) and swap to the leather for meetings or occasions or whatever. The swap is very very easy with a little practice and the result is a very smart (I think) watch.

I have a small collection of more expensive watches, including an old Rolex I have had for mumble years, but the Classic is the go to for day to day now and the tracking. When I hit the desired weight I may change but I'm happy for the moment.

My wife has the Pop and with the selection of multi coloured straps they sell is very happy with colour co-ordinating it for day to day and casual wear.

The only drawbacks seem to be that it's easy to fool it that you are walking more than you are with any bouncy transport (think boating) and occasionally the hands get out of sync with the time and you need to resync it with the smart phone.

That said I just found that it's stopped after a a swim (involuntary) this afternoon. Hopefully it's the battery?

I presume it is the swinging motion of your arm that activates the step counting.
That is bad news for those of us that do the supermarket shopping.
My arm does not swing when pushing the trolley.
All those uncounted steps.

It is more than that. A bit more "refined". Walking is like falling - you stop falling forward when you put your foot in front and keep repeating it. The steps are counted by measuring this.

I read "Trackers" by Richard MacManus (of RWW fame), who is Petone-based. He wrote it after getting into the Quantified Self idea because of a personal situation (he was diagnosed with diabetes) and I got sent a preview edition. The revised US edition is now called "Health Trackers: How technology is helping us monitor and improve our health" - in one of the chapter he recounts how the Fitbit guys ran around with lots of measuring equipment to decode exactly this.

Rest assured walking around pushing a trolley cart will still count.

That Classic is one good looking watch in its own right. This is exactly what I'd like. A tracker without having my wrists jammed with separate stuff. How does the calorie burn rate compare with the Charge HR/ Surge with the heart rate tracking?

An update to the app just released allows you to measure heart rate with phone's camera...

I think my problem with the Activite (and Steel) is the small watch face.

My old dress watches (Casio Edifice, nothing fancy) is significantly larger and I like that.

Oh well - no rush, will wait and see what else comes along. Maybe a fitbit flex would do.

I just tried that, pretty cool.
I scored 76 (sitting down), is that good or bad?
Better than 0 at least!

Is there any NZ stores/websites selling the Activite (with the leather strap)? or do you have to buy that one in USD from the Withings website? I can only see other sites selling the pop which I am not so keen on.
