I guess just looking at what happened in India. Spoke with many people there struggling to get their relatives into hospital, people who had relatives die in the room next door as a result etc... Not thinking its as big a risk in NZ but if it pans out bad with the hospitals and you didn't have a $100 oxygen bottle you will be pretty upset if it could have saved your relatives life...

They were pretty much all un-vaccinated people

I presume NZ will be going into lockdowns before it would ever get that bad. But we seem to have been assured by the government that the systems will cope under this traffic light system.

When I was in hospital last year, I was always around the 92% mark when the nurses did the 3/4 hourly check.

They just got me to take a couple of deep breaths which brought it back up to a more normal reading when they retested.

Prior to that I was on a "trachy" which is not a pleasant experience.

That was very naughty. It just gives a false positive. If you kept taking deep breaths to keep your SpO2% up you would soon tire and be quite exhausted, which would defeat the purpose of bed rest & recovery.

If they were doing it to exercise your lungs to bring the muscles back up to strength, or to clear your lungs of mucus or to carry out a Pulmonary Function Test, then yes, but not to cheat on SaO2 levels.

This happened in the HDU and on a ward (I just thought it was SOP). I did need to use the suction on a regular basis with the trachy though.

Dynamic: ... and was happy to wait a few weeks. ...

jonathan18: ... the unit I've bought from Aliexpress - when it turns up that is!

Didn't want to play the courier gamble twice over with current courier delays & increased parcel volumes for Christmas. Sourced some locally. Then again, I also didn't plan ahead & do this weeks ago.

Edit: typo

I bought one of these for about $42 (inc courier). In stock ex Auckland - arrived in about 3 days.

https://www.emax.co.nz/Oxygen-Oximeter-Finger-Pulse-Rate-with-Batteries-7931.html

Said my o2 was 98 and my wifes 99.

Easy to use. Dont know how accurate. Just pop your finger in and wait a second or two.

Shows pulse rate as well - checked that and was accurate.

Seemed sensible to have one at home these days.

Thanks, just grabbed one myself.

Mine turned up this morning. %Spo2 of 98.

No batteries though :( lucky work has plenty of aaa

Not sure a.comparison with India is reasonable as its pretty much third world for large amounts of their population.

If this had been an issue in western Europe I would have more sympathy.

Remember medical oxygen has different fitting on regulator head from memory and also most oxygen used in hospitals doesn't come from bottles it comes from liquid oxygen vacume insulator tanks.

There is at least one production plant for liquid oxygen in nz and if supply got really low,I would expect production to be dedicated to medical use and away from industrial.

Mine has a slightly audible hiss (like from the speaker) when not being used and drained a set of batteries overnight. It does say to remove batteries when not in use. That seems to have solved it.

Mine should arrive in the next day or two. If it does that I'll return it and get a better brand.

Likewise, nothing like that here either - mine arrived yesterday too. I note that, despite the website saying "with batteries", it did not arrive with any.

Purchased this device - Oxyfit™ Fingertip Oximeter – Wellue Health. (getwellue.com) - nearly a year ago from Amazon.

This device is rechargable, links to a phone app and keep track of you readings for analysis. Its easy to use and you can almost forget you're using it.

As I've never had any Covid symptoms (yet!), I used it a couple of times (my readings are all normal and boring) and then forgot about it.

Resincely, I charged it up and it still works. My readings hadn't changed but I'll keep it charged up and handy for the coming Covid19 Delta wave.

No noises coming from mine either.

Put the batteries in when it arrived last Saturday - Batteries are fine.

If it's hissing it sounds like something wrong with the beeper thing.

Ask for a replacement.

PS You could try tuning the beep off. I think when its turned off you hold that power button down for a "long hold" and get the menu. There is an option to turn the sounds off. Sounds are not useful anyway.

I did look at that menu, I'll try that tonight.

The instructions look like a B model when mine is the C model

Website says not included but the invoice I received says Batteries Included. My unit is still "processing" with courier company.
