"For these users - who are mainly people who have used the iCloud Backup service to transfer their information and settings to a new device or to restore a backup - it is not possible to recover any diary entries created prior to reinstallation," the spokeswoman said.

This could be a bit of a problem as there are new iPhones due out soon (announcement rumoured for around the 13th)

That is very interesting. If I were intending to upgrade my iPhone this year, and if I hadn't read this thread, I would have been blissfully ignorant of the fact that my Covid Tracer diary hadn't transferred over to my new device.

I emailed their feedback address and the reply I got back indicated they are looking at iCloud backup and can only assume the Android equivalent.

Wish more people would use this; or staff would only serve people if they have scanned in.

it wont install on too many NZ phones (android)
just yesterday I had a txt from a friend who said it wont install on his phone (incompatible Android version I guess) , his phone is only 4 years old but still on Android 5.

so do we ban/refuse all those with 4+ year old phones ?

If people can't use the app then they can just use a manual contact tracing register.

That'd be amongst the minority of people who were actually using it in the first place. I've seen for weeks the majority of people going into stores are not scanning in. Makes a bit of a joke of the whole point of stores having to have mandatory codes given it's not mandatory to scan in.

On the bit about backups of the tracer app diary - my P30 Pro crapped out (I should be receiving a replacement any day) so everything I had on that is gone. As will everything I have on the loan phone when the new one arrives.

I use the tracer app everywhere I go but anyone who knows anything about human behaviour can figure out that you can't rely on a solution that requires large numbers of people to exercise personal discipline on an ongoing basis.

There is no such thing as common sense as fundamentally the few will mess it up for the majority.

Its the majority who DONT use the app.
Its been an abject failure for several reasons . If its not being used, its serves little purpose .

Honestly , its time to accept its a failure and just move on .
No point in pretending otherwise .

I don't think it is a failure. People stopped using masks on public transport as soon as we dropped back to Level 1 - the only time I took a bus I was one of only two people wearing them. I still scan when entering shops.

It's up to people. The app can't be blamed if people don't want to do it.

What do you propose is used instead of the app. Nothing?

Yes , the app can be improved especially by making it work with older OS versions but the app does work pretty well. I'm not aware of any better tracing methods that are currently available.
