We need to acknowledge that not everyone has a phone that can run apps, and making contact tracing compulsory would force those people to use those manual registers where contact details are exposed to everyone.

I would quite like to see a system where you fill in a card with your contact details and then put it through a slot in a collection box. If that option were available then there is no excuse for not providing contact tracing details.

Either that or a pre-printed multipart form that you write on and it transfers inside, and then you tear off the strip you wrote on or something. Or something where the user takes a card from the establishment. The book thing only works one way, you can ask the retailer who was there, but you cant ask a person where they were on a certain day.

As of about 10 days ago, my COVID Tracer App stopped working. My phone is a RealMe X2 Pro running Android 10, and the app was working just fine.  Regular QR code readers are still working too, I tried scanning the COVID codes with a QR reader and the scan data all came up on my screen. The Tracer app has both requested permissions, and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Any suggestions on what might be causing this or how to fix it would be VERY gratefully received.

Thanks, do you have a link? After a search for "tracer app" at moh.govt.nz I've been doing a Ctrl-F search for "beta" on each page listed in the results, can't find a mention of the Beta. A search "beta" there didn't bring up any covid-related results, and searching for "beta" came up empty.

EDIT: Found it - for some reason it's not mentioned on the site at all, as far as I can tell, but in the comments on the Google Play download page they have posted this in reply to each one of the "it's not working any more" comments. Posted here in case others have a similar issue:

"Kia ora, We have a fix available to a trial group upon request. To opt into the group, please email us on help@covidtracer.min.health.nz and tell us the: exact type of phone you are using and email address that you use with the Google Play Store."

After fumbling at my work door with my hands full, I thought it would be a good idea to make a manual entry using the web.

Nope. You can "register" and give an address, and update it, but make a manual entry, no. I would like to automate my arrival at work with a covid 19 entry, but there's no way. A lot of work places could generate tracker entries for their staff. If there was a web interface someone could write an app that made entries automatically.

Why this lack of obvious functionality? Sure, there's security and abuse issues, but they should be solvable.

Has anyone reverse-engineered the app?

I think it's because, due to privacy considerations, the Ministry of Health opted to store all data on your device rather than in a centralised location. So, I guess that means that you have to use a single device to record all of your visits.

"Covid-19 contact tracing cards are live in Ngongotahā trial"

More than 1100 people in Ngongotahā have a new and vital accessory this week - a Covid-19 contact tracing card.

The cards go live today and are a key part of an on-the-ground trial of the technology and its potential enhancement of the Covid contact tracing process.

Co-designed by Te Arawa Covid Hub, the Ministry of Health and the Universities of Otago and Waikato, the trial's purpose is to understand how a Covid contact tracing card works in a real-world scenario, whether it is compatible with New Zealand's contact tracing systems, and if people will accept and use them.

So far, the majority of people who have signed up to the trial are women aged between 40 and 74.

A Covid contact tracing card is not capable of tracking the wearer's location or identity and the information is fully contained, encrypted and protected on each individual card.

Its primary function is to build a memory of contacts so the wearer can be quickly alerted if they have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19

If it's a trial that you have to sign up for (as suggested) then won't that give a false result of its acceptance by the wider community? Presumably only people that are interested in using the tech and believe it will work well will sign up for the trial. The people that are likely to forget to take their card with them when they go out, or wear it incorrectly (eg leave it in a handbag or pocket) aren't likely to be on the trial.

Yes and no.  Those who have signed up give a fairly good indication of the demographics that will accept it.

However, it's like anything, might be great for the first few weeks then the novelty will wear off and people will stop using it like they have with masks and the tracer app.  The whole contact tracing thing requires people to get it ingrained as a habit and understand how it helps to protect them rather than brushing it off with the traditional "won't happen to me" attitude.

Like most community group SM pages, people on ours have done local supermarket surveys while waiting for partners and so on.

Finding low uptake of course. But then you have to hold your tongue at the expletives going 'Good to know the app will stop me getting Covid' from those who just don't get it. But who's smart remarks are detrimental to the greater audience.

Auto log out again yesterday, still no option to scan when auto logged out, didn't have easy access to my log in details so didn't scan when out and about, only to hear that community case in my region.

Why the MoH app developers refuse to make the app user friendly is beyond me. They need to be moved on and replaced with a more capable public-focused development team.
