I have a different issue to most people I know.  Too much to do.  Quite a lot of pressure.

Redesigning operations to fit with a 2m separation (and accepting a 60% decrease in productivity that went with it), then redesigning everything again when govt position flip-flopped back to 1m.  Sourcing PPE, and disinfectant cleaners.

A bit of an eye opener on the preparedness front.  Most surface cleaners aren't antiviral (should have known that).  In essential industry there is no govt support for workers a company can't provide work for.

We have had to reduce employee numbers to make space and either we keep paying those people we don't need or lay them off so they can get welfare.

Despite exhaustion, stress is making sleep difficult.

I'm normally very resilient, cope with stress well, compartmentalise.  This is different.  If think it's because home is now my workplace.

It looks like some normality will emerge this week, so hopefully things will get better.

Vent over.

I have found this thread helpful however as I posted in another COVID thread I am over this. The antics of a few(the usual few) make this Forum more hostile than normal. They assume they know you and that they have some kind of inside knowledge about your life and their usual antics are to use veiled attacks or they remove the veil all together with apparent immunity.

Although I have found this thread useful I am not prepared to expose myself further to these folk. In short my shields are up. I hope everyone who has participated in this thread keep safe and well and get through this time.

My wife had a wobbly kind of day today. It has only been a few days and it seems to be affecting more than you would think.

I blame the unknown element - there are just too many of them. A prison term has a defined end. This does not. Combine it with the economic meltdown that has barely begun and the possible illness scenario as well and it can all get a bit daunting. Especially if you have the kind of brain that unthinkingly attempts to strategise outcomes and scenarios.

There is an old saying - ignorance is bliss. Times like this, I think we all understand it.

@geektastic you're united with wifey now?

Always.

Hang in there, team.

If anyone is feeling lonely or stressed or vulnerable and would like to video chat this evening or any evening in the next month or even beyond, just PM me.  it would be my pleasure, whether you and I have connected for any reason in the past or not.

Cheers
Mike

Also, GZ has a Slack group.

I wasn’t familiar with it. I work in a team of one (and did so even when I wasn’t supposed to!) but I joined out of curiosity.

As MF has observed elsewhere, it’s not massively active but it is another place to interact and is slightly different to doing so here.

I gather the young have an app called Houseparty that is a sort of drop in multiple video chat. Perhaps we could explore a GZ implementation of that?

Nice thoughts....  I've never tried Slack myself.  And I've not heard the kids mention Houseparty but I'll ask about it.  Has anyone any first hand experience with it?

I don't actually like video (or audio). I realise that this is how young(er) people do it, but my medium of choice is the good old written word. It gives me time to think about what I am saying before I say it. Also time to digest what I am reading. Just stating my preference.

There was something on the radio (RNZ) about it this morning - I didn't hear it all - but the reporter expressed some grave concerns about what you consent to (privacy) when you sign up.

Edit:  RNZ article here.

My eldest son experienced his first ever "virtual birthday" party using Houseparty yesterday.

He and his friends have been having lots of fun with it.

I've found some noise cancelling headphones have been a freaking god-send. Especially when the kids are on their technology, while I am working just put them on and some quiet music is doing wonders for my sanity.

Understand good ones are expendy, but those who are reading this and don't normally find time to listen to music, try it out.

Generally I would agree with you (no end of surprises being discovered in lockdown!!). Back in the day, I actually penned my work letters in manuscript (and with a fountain pen) for my secretary to type. I even wrote reports in manuscript.

My mother and I have conducted about 75% of our entire relationship through the post; she wrote to me when I was away at boarding school from 7 1/2 and we had to write home every Sunday after chapel. In hindsight I think that was Proof of Life though!

It continues to this day.

Not the PM apparently - she is making it hard to keep people calm by telling everyone at least once per day to stay at home and neglecting to mention that essential businesses are an exception and employees of those businesses should go to work if it's safe for them to do so.
