Went to my local bakery today, and stood in a decent queue of 5 or so waiting to get in. Figured I'd scan the QR code while I waited instead of on the way in. Scanned and promptly got asked "why was I bothering no one scans anymore". I responded that I always try to scan (probably 95% of the time) and that it was no hassle for me, couldn't hurt, had a decent amount of upside if there was an outbreak, and that in my opinion there is always a risk of an outbreak - all it takes is one border leak, or one slipup around our ICU transfer from Fiji.

The gentleman agreed, but said he didn't have the app anymore and couldn't be bothered downloading it again. SMH.

I note a pretty low level of scanning pretty well where ever I go with one exception, the local church service.

i7 and have never had a problem scanning any QR code, even ones behind glass.

I do have high battery usage with "Exposure Notifications", so have actually turned it off. Probably not ideal, but kept getting low battery notifications most afternoons.

Remembering of course if there is an outbreak it could be 3-5+ days later before most people would know by the time symptoms make themselves known, a test is sought and processed.  Who would easily remember they were briefly at that specific bakery, in close proximity with other random people, collecting whatever nasties by using the same EFTPOS keypad and door handles as everyone else has touched up to a week later?

Of course some of you will have realised you can create your own NFC stickers… will post the string structure later.

Jon

I would really appreciate this. I could make NFC tags for home and work (the two places I visit most often).

The payload is basically the same structure as the QR codes: https://github.com/minhealthnz/nzcovidtracer-docs/blob/main/docs/functions/nfc.md

And there we have it! The apathy confirmed as expected!

From: https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/qr-code-scanning-slumps-lowest-levels-since-delta-scare

Ministry of Health data shows New Zealanders have fallen out of the habit of scanning in, with the number of daily scans falling to numbers seen before the Wellington Delta case scare in June.

The 'Saved' and 'Recent locations' features are really nice.  I can now 'scan in' to regularly-visited places before I get anywhere near the front door

GRRR!  Not surprised from my own observations.  Must say on the odd occasion I'm liking being able to dial up previous scanned locations when adding manual entires as if you had actually scanned in.

I'm sure it'll pick right up after our next first case has been roaming around for a week. No worries

jonherries: NFC and the favourites work are really interesting for geeks - at least on iOS (I don’t know Android so unsure how we have architected that).

You can now create Shortcuts for checking in as the payload for the checkin is now a deeplink/the new functional equivalent I can’t remember the name of.

Eg. one of our people has a shortcut to checkin when her iPhone sees the work wifi.

Any tips on how to do this? I can set up shortcuts, but how do I identify the deeplink for a particular QR code?

Don't need to know the QR code. The new version you save 'favourites' from a pre-scanned list in your diary. That takes care of the data

I'm guessing they have some screen press actions or direct calls to use the named favourite.

Liking the saved favourites.

Can now scan in before I get out of the car at the supermarket. No more dropped phone.

Downside - no one sees me scan in and I look like all the other no-scanners out there.

I liked the function on South Austraila’s scanning app whereby it put a green check mark on your phone screen when you scanned in. Shops had the right to ask to see the check mark when you entered the store. Places like Target and JBHiFi had security guards checking before you were allowed to enter. I believe the SA Police could issue spot fines to both the customer and retailer if someone couldn’t produce proof of scanning in. This function surely wouldn’t be that difficult to add to our COVID app.

Don't we effectively have that now, the app shows that where we have just signed into until you go back the the "Record a Visit" screen?
