Handle9: Hummus (and baba ghanoush, moutabal and fattoush) is one of the best things about living in the middle east. The stuff in NZ is like NZ gucamole - a poor imitation. I'm not sure what the difference is (I suspect the tahini) but it's like crack.

It's always served with oil on top which also makes it so much creamier.

Lots of things taste better in the place they originate from.  I guess that's why they were so popular in their place of origin.

Using guac as a example you need nice limes, avo and chilies (and maybe other ingredients too).

We may not have the same varieties or they may not grow as well here, or be as fresh, or different terroir or ...

I also think there is psychological dimension.

I am a vegetarian and never do takeaways (other than Indian) but I am curious: Is anyone actually suffering from withdrawal or is it not so bad? Have those who live on KFC and BK and that kind of thing been able to find acceptable substitutes or do they just curl up in bed with cravings that can't be satisfied? How is it going for you?

Nah, people are just exaggerating. Salty greasy goodness that's suprisingly difficult to replicate at home

Not missing here, thanks. I can cook and wife is doing some Hello Fresh every other night.

I am the opposite of a vegetarian - I avoid vegetables if at all possible. However, we cannot really get takeaway out here (you may have the same issue) - you would have to go to Masterton to do that which would be about an 80km round trip just for food!

So I am certainly not suffering from withdrawal at all - other than I quite fancied roast rib on the bone this weekend and you need a butcher to get that, not a supermarket!

I have had a few moments where I have missed the ability to get takeaways when work has been overwhelming and cooking dinner for 4 has been a challenge. We haven't really had much of a chance to prepare any heat and eat meals for those situations yet, hopefully, this weekend, as I have two big Short Ribs I can BBQ and store up. We may do a Lasanga if I can get any pasta!

On the whole, we have been eating very well.

I do wonder how long NZ society will retain the gratitude for all the things we have, and can access under normal circumstances, once normality resumes.

I have realized a little of what I take for granted, expect further reality checks as time goes on, such as moving about freely and being able to attain pretty much anything I want or need at the drop of a hat?

I suspect we may be a while away from international travel and I must admit, with a trip tentatively planned for later in the year, I'll miss that.

This whole thing has made it more apparent to us what we want, need and really value. It's not an entirely negative thing for us, we are finding it making our marriage and relationships with the kids stronger (if not always smooth).

It's certainly not easy but its also a good chance for reflection for those who aren't as busy as others.

I agree re the freedom of movement comment - hard with two boys to keep them busy and occupied all day and in the evenings as well, when we can't really go anywhere.

Similar, I'm more of a meatatarian and, tbh, this household was consuming far more takeaways than it should have been. So there's some huge upsides to all the takeaways being closed. We're eating plenty of delicious Thai food now and I'm dropping weight like it's going out of fashion. No withdrawals I'm pleased to report.

For those of you missing your local indian takeaway I can personally highly recommend these:

https://www.lovethycurry.co.nz/product/butterchicken

And

https://www.spiceneasy.co.nz/products/IndianCurryRecipeKits/default.asp.html

They aren't exactly heat and eat, but are still very easy and will give you a bit of an insight into cooking with spices in a pretty easy, hand-holding fairly foolproof way.

These both absolutely kill anything you'd get from a jar, that you throw in with some pan-fried chicken for flavour.
