This is just rubbish. 1KM falls outside of the error % manufacturers put on odometers. Blatant Revenue Gathering.

Totally unreasonable.

There has to be a reasonable tolerance because of errors in measuring speed.

It seems they aren't satisfied increasing their revenue (during the holidays) from $1million to $6millon. Now they are going after even the really careful people.

Who said anything about the police and fiscal benefit? I didn't say Plod was getting a new holiday home, I said they were revenue gathering. If you think it's about saving lives with a tolerance of 1KM/h you aren't living in reality.

Then they need to focus more on getting the incompetent, distracted driver doing 49km/h off the road, more than the safe, competent driver doing 51km/h. This is just going to have people watching their speedo more than the road, causing more accidents.

Of course the Police don't get the money. A deeply in debt government gets it.

I do not feel safer with a ridiculously low speed tolerance that could catch anyone out. Law is not good when it punishes honest people.

I am also tired on these dodgy statistics that the Police keep quoting. They can't prove that the low speed tolerance has saved the lives they are claiming.

Ever since I can remember, it is the same story every holiday. If road toll is down it is because of great policing. If the road toll is up it is because the drivers have suddenly gone crazy.

I do take road safety seriously. But, I want the Police to treat us like adults and not idiots when it comes to policy.

If that is the case then set the limit to 20kph.

This will damage the cops reputation and people will certainly be less willing to help out police with tip-offs etc if they've just been pinged for going over the speed limit by 1kph due to a gust of wind/hill/or speedo inaccuracy.

Effectively the cops have just reduced the limit to 90kph with a 10kph tolerance for the above factors.

[edit] incidentally, I bet the chief plod gets a performance bonus for reducing the road toll so it may well just pay for his new holiday house.

The tolerance isn't compatible with the Warrant of Fitness. The WoF allows for 10% out on your speedo, but the police policy isn't compatible with that.

Aside from that, there is also no consistent evidence that the lowered tolerance has had an effect on either the number of fatalities or the number of accidents. There is no real evidence going into these policies, only random observations where blame is attributed differently according to the desired outcomes of a particular group.

Look at the actual data. Despite the hard line on speed there is no consistent evidence that a reduction in speed tolerance results in a reduction in accidents and fatalities. This 4km/h tolerance has been in place since 2010, so you would expect to see a consistent reduction in fatalities if there was a causal relationship. But you don't see that - in fact, at the same time the police were shouting about the success, 2012 saw a massive increase in fatalities.

Police issued 200,000 tickets last year, most of them from camera vans and stationary cameras, where you don't actually get the fine until two weeks later. How is that slowing people down and making the road a safer place? And just so you know I have a horse in this race, how was my ticket for doing 106km/h during the last long weekend on an empty stretch of SH1 between Tawa and Porirua at 8am on a Saturday making the road a safer place? I have many similar tickets, but I've only ever once seen one of these vans in an urban area (where fatalities increased by 25% last year). I have yet to see the same kind of emphasis on tailgating and the safety cell.

The police don't know the difference between statistical noise and an actual trend. They shouldn't be setting their own policy, because they don't do the research, sponsor any meaningful research or have the technical know-how to interpret that research. This (pdf) is the kind of research the police don't do - that 36% of the decrease in driver fatalities is attributed to a change in driver behaviour, with one factor of three involved in that 36% being speed (mean speed reduction also has a fairly weak coefficient, meaning that there isn't a great deal of statistical evidence for spending so much money and effort on targeting it). Start on page 18 - aside from physics, that the slower you're going the less likely you are to be injured, there is no meaningful research that demonstrates that reduced tolerance or enforcement has an effect - especially not the kind of enforcement that takes place on major routes, which is hide behind a corner or a bush type of enforcement. Unless that's a police car getting ready to pull out and ticket you, it's pointless in slowing people down and preventing the bad behaviour in the first place.

I like the police, and think they do a hard job. But they're following a wrong-headed policy here that's wasting everyone's time and money.

i am so going to envy those with radar cruise control!

ie set it to 99.5 and it will slow down when there is a car ahead ...

otherwise it will be difficult to maintain 99.5 with my rubbery CVT transmission
