I have a 1997 Primera. For the last couple of weeks I have noticed the tachometer needle bouncing erratically. This is an intermittent issues. It started happening on cold morning only, but is now happening during the day as well. No other symptoms.

My thoughts are that this is likely be the voltage regulator?

Happens on a friends Pulsar. Settles down after about 5 minutes.

A quick look at the nz primera/pulsar car club forums suggests it is sometimes a dry solder joint in the instrument panel. Maybe worth trying before replacing it.

Similar issue to my '92 Pulsar - (carefully) pulled apart the instrument/cluster panel to check for any dodgy solder joints near the tach... Couldn't see anything that looked suspect, but re-soldered all the joints anyway.
I might have bridged a connection or two as now the tach is very smooth in operation, but at least it isn't jumping around all over the place.

Iv'e seen it on Pulsars, primers and bluebirds. Common Nissan issue, if its not to bad just put up with it otherwise get your wallet out.

I had the same issue on my Mazda Lantis, it turned out to be a faulty part (the thing that sends the info to the dial (cars are not my strongest suit :-)))
