Hi - we've got an imported Toyota with an after-market alarm/immobiliser installed and are trying to find a second remote that can be used with the system. I believe the new remote has to match the type of existing remote and that the shape/build of it could be important... but I can't find anything similar to this one in Wellington (see photo).
Any suggestions as to how to go about getting a second working remote for the car would be appreciated (I don't understand the tech in these things). Thanks.

With the Manual which came with the Alarm system there will be instructions on how to "pair" another remote to the car (if the alarm system allows it) . I presume you don't know the master alarm code? or even the Brand of Alarm?

If its aftermarket, you need to find out the make/model for starters. Anything on the alarm unit itself to identify manufacturer info ?

It may just end up being cheaper to get a new alarm installed in the long run.....

I bought a garage door remote of them and they were very responsive and helpful when I had some problems.
Let me know if you want their email address (rather than trawling through their listings /asking questions on their auctions).

Doesn't mister minute in malls do remotes? I know our local Lower hutt one does.

At least from there you could take it back pretty easily if it didn't work.

Go to someone like SLAP who do Car Alarms, they should be able to tell you pretty quickly what it belongs to and can probably source a replacement.

EDIT: Looks to be a steal shield.

Hi all - thanks for the helpful responses! Fantastic GZ community FTW.

I will investigate under the dash etc. to see if I can find more details on the brand of alarm, plus try other suggestions (Mr. Minute, TradeMe, etc) - hopefully I can pair this with another remote - Thanks all.

The guy in the link I posted is located in Wellington. I have seen some of his post on other forums and he like the company name, is obsessive about car security so probably worth hitting up for advice/replacement.

Agree re: change it...

...to something you know how it works and try to establish what is your DR plan.

It is not a good idea to use unknown system if you do not know whether it is just an intruder deterrent (makes noise, but car can be started) or immobiliser (has some sort of cut-off circuitry to prevent engine start), what circuit(s) it protects (e.g. ignition, starter, something else, or combination of above) and how to bypass it in case you've damaged/lost your remote.
If you will be changing it, suggest you familiarise yourself with what installer does and "how to"...

Good system is the one where:
- it is hard or impossible to intercept/replicate remote signal (if there is “a signal” :));
- system is unknown to the locals;
- installation is non-standard, non-obvious;
- has more than one protected paths;
- hard to guess and difficult to bypass in less than 60 seconds... :)
- cost less than the car it protects :)

System can cost as low as $5 and protect better than the one which cost $1000 (depends on how determined are crooks about that car)
