At the moment we've got two cars, a Nissan Presage which is getting a bit iffy with age, and a Subaru Legacy 3.0R B spec wagon. We're looking at replace the Presage with a Tribeca, partly because I love the Legacy and also it just seems like a nice tradeoff 7-seater. Any experiences/opinions?

yep seem to be one or two decent-priced 2nd hand ones tho.

what alternatives are worth looking at? I particularly hate the Nissan's rubbish 4wd. At least in snow it doesn't work at all, whereas the Subaru 4wd actually works.

Ugliest car off the century. (1st gen)
Crazy thirsty on gas. A V8 would be considered fuel efficient.
Can't get into rear seats. To be fair, that's normal for SUVs.
Other than that it's ok.

If you want a 4wd buy a 4WD.
If you want seats get an Estima.
If you want power get a proper car or wagon.

For the price, get a Santa Fe.  There is a reason they keep winning awards (and the Tribeca doesn't)

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

If you want an SUV get something else... A Santa Fe or Highlander. But they are not 4WD. They are FWD above 40kph

Actually there is a new tribeca model ... It's called an Outback. That is 4WD at any speed. But only 5 seats.
