Currently I have one of my cars with the Rego on hold with an expiry in Sept. This morning I went to the NZTA site and start going through the process of buying some rego. I selected 3 months however it gave me a new expiry of August the 14th....

Thats less than a month when I selected 3 months, any ideas before I ring them and find out whats going on?

Was the rego overdue when you put it on hold? If so, you will be backpaying for the overdue time.

I'm pretty sure if you put your rego on hold then renew it after less than 3 months, the original hold has no effect so you are liable for the entire period of rego.

In other words putting the rego on hold is only useful if you expect the vehicle to be off the road for longer than 3 months.

You can't put a vehicle on hold if its overdue, you have to pay the outstanding license fees first.

Thats not the issue either, it was put on hold on the 16th of March so 4 months ago yesterday, whats the bet since they have updated the licensing fee's their system has issues.

Perhaps an issue, because it sounds like it's a month out.

You can only put it on hold in 3 month blocks.

You put it on hold on the 16th of March, and the rego was current to that day, if you re register it today, you should owe the rego from June 15th(ish), assuming your chosing 3 months that should give you a date in mid september.

Speculation, but when you put the rego on hold, did it have some carry over? e.g, you put the exemption paperwork through on the 16th of March, but the car had a valid rego until May? If that was the case, then perhaps the exemption only started in May, and your currently within the first 3 month block, so it's wanting you to pay the 3 months rego from may which would give an August date?

There is a cheaper loophole than backpaying it... especially in your case where its over 2 months to backpay... change the ownership to friend/family then licence it, then change it back. If on hold it doesn't need to be backpaid by old owner, and starts on date of ownership transfer for new owner.
