Hi There!

Wondering if all places that sell Diesel in NZ sell the same thing? With Petrol I bought 98 Octane for my higher performance vehicles, wondered if the same applies to high performance diesels?

A little bit outside of my area, but I believe only 1 grade of diesel is sold at service stations. Different brands might have different additives and the mix will vary seasonally, but on the whole its not like the octane rating of petrol.

This is the regulation controlling retail fuel sales like this:

The regulation looks like it only permits the sale "Diesel" and "Biodiesel". Not really a "grade", but that's it.

The only thing to look out for with a modern common rail diesel, is a high water content in the fuel.

Stations that have a high turnover of diesel won't get the level of moisture in their fuel, that smaller stations have. Largely due to condensation etc in the tank being absorbed by the fuel.

Other than that, pretty much anything will run fine in a diesel. I used to run my 4.2 turbo Nissan Safari on transformer oil. Ran a LOT better than on Diesel, and it made the mechanical fuel injection quiet.

I filled up last night for a grand total of $67 which was an incredible saving over what it cost me with 98 petrol. I was overjoyed. Other than the Diesel rattle, I am MIGHTILY Impressed with my new car!

I think there is such a thing as winter Diesel, it is more common the further down the south island you go. Essentially it helps with the diesel Gelling in sub zero conditions

My wife filled up yesterday at a truck stop in Whangarei. Listed pump price $1.099 - 12c discount with our fuel card = 97.9c per litre! Unbelievably cheap motoring compared to petrol.

Occasionally, when driving up in our VW Golf, we get a well-meaning truckie telling us that they don't sell petrol at this truck stop

Yep and registration..

Both of those were the reason we got rid our diesel vehicle..

RUCs currently $58 per 1000km. I'm still using up a whole lot that I bought 2 years ago about $51. Based on a fuel consumption of 5L per 100km, this equates to $1.16c per Litre extra -- so all up $2.14 which is very similar to petrol.

HOWEVER, a diesel vehicle will travel about 30% further per litre of fuel than an equivalent petrol vehicle, so that is where the saving comes from.

Yep and registration..

Rego is now only $50 per year more than an equivalent petrol vehicle.

What sort of vehicle do you have with a 30,000km service interval?

My Golf is 15,000km, although it is over 4 years old now.

Wait until you have to buy road user charges then, that smile will wipe away. The Govt needs to get out of the dark ages and start taxing diesel at the pump.
