So I'm looking for a good site to book flights to the USA from, as well as additional thoughts on what I'd need.

I'm currently a university student, and have my passport sorted. I'll need to sort out my visa soon, although that seems really simple.

In addition, what tips do you have that could cheapen it up for me? I'll be there for a month.

Suggest kayak and Expedia to watch flight prices and then book directly with your airline of choice. I've got a friend who really likes sky scanner but never found it to be user friendly, at least on the mobile web side of things.

Air Fiji and Hawanian are two ways to break the Air NZ monopoly on the LAX run but depends where abouts you are heading for and you might get a stop over on a pacific island as a bonus.

As you're a student, it may be worth talking to STA Travel, otherwise - SkyScanner is my usual go to for flight comparison

Compared to NZ, it is generally cheaper. Eating will be cheaper. If you're travelling, Motel 6 has often provided me with a perfectly acceptable home for the night for $50- $60 US or less. They are even pet friendly and almost always situated near somewhere you can get food.

The pet friendliness always appealed to me because here it is so rare. I'd love to be able to travel with my dogs, but man is it hard to do that.

At Motel 6, service animals and well-behaved pets always stay free*. They are permitted unless they pose a health or safety risk or are prohibited by law. Pet limit of 2 pets per room. Some state and local municipalities forbid any pets other than service animals. "

Also look at rail travel intercity. Often very cheap and you see way more than if you fly.

I hate the idea of sleeping in someone else's house so Air B&B is a no go for me, but if it works for you then all good!

I hate the idea of sleeping in someone else's house so Air B&B is a no go for me, but if it works for you then all good!

I'm a student that flats in Dunedin; I essentially am sleeping in someone else's house bahahah.

Also have booked flights! Appreciate all the advice.
