I've seen a 2008 Peugeot 308 diesel for sale that appeals. But it is a euro and a few years old. I've always had Japanese before. Does anyone have a feel for reliability and service costs of Peugeots?

Don't touch it with a barge-pole! I have two relatives that have had Peugeots and had major reliability problems with them. Waiting months for parts because there is no stock in the country.

Our mechanic gave me some good advice:

1) Don't buy old European cars because parts are very expensive and reliability is poor compared to Japanese makes.

2) If you must buy a European car, buy a new, or nearly new one.

diesels generally require more servicing and maintanence to keep them humming, So unless you can confirm that its service records are up to scratch I would steer clear,

I have had euro cars for years ... but a diesel Pug? I'd rather shave with a cheese grater.

Newer Peugeots i.e 2013 onwards have a much improved reliability and build quality, a 2008 308 I would not touch. You will be buying a heap of grief.

Colleague had a brand new Holden Astra top model that spent more time in the dealer's workshop than in his garage :)
Initial issue was a factory pipe breaking. But the repairs killed it! (Or so he thinks, dealer blamed the new part not the mistake in repair) ... But ... I guess ... These things happen eh.

Holdens though aren't exactly known for their reliability, I had one and bits literally fell off it, worst car ever had, and that is saying something considering I have also had Fiats and Peugeots, which also aren't known for their reliabililty . Also aren't Astras European made? That said I have currently got a new mazda, and that has some electrical issues with the navigation system, and the indicators, but it has a 5 year warranty on it for them to fix those.

Unlike everyone in here I actually have a 2009 Peugeot 308 diesel [wagon] so I speak from actual experience

Other than consumables it has been very reliable [the only issue was dealer inflicted which can happen with any brand]
The MY 2008 308 has an extremely good safety rating [n fact as good as it gets for the period of car]
It is a very good car [check the reviews]
I found the servicing costs the same as any other car, where it gets expensive is going to brand dealerships and even nowadays they have to be competitive. Since the car is out of warranty you do not have to buy expensive 'peugeot' branded consumables.
The early 307s were a problematic but this is a 308, check the reviews yourself it is a well regarded car.

When we bought a new Geekmobile we decided that we needed something with lots of airbags and a good driving feel. Also cheaper to maintain than our old American-made Chrysler. We tested a few Japanese cars and the feel was underwhelming. At the end of decided on an European one - a VW Golf. Mind you, petrol, not diesel. It feels nice to drive, it feels safe and the number of VWs in our streets pretty much guarantees parts availability...

So that's an option if you want an European without the price tag of an Audi or BWM but with more presence than a Fiat, Peugeot or Renault...

Skoda are part of the VW-Audi group so they use many of the same parts you find in a VW. However, they are built in the Czech republic and from what I've seen, the build quality is not as good as VW.

Mind you, they are a bit cheaper, but in this case you get what you pay for.

I thought many top end Audi and VW aren't built in Germany.
