BP launch their new BPMe app on Monday, so you can pay for fuel in your car. You will still need to hop out of the car to put the fuel in though. Works with eligible BP fuel cards, so I hope to set this up and give it a go on Monday.

Please do fill the forum with many horror stories of BP stations exploding because everybody is going to get out of their cars waving their mobile phones at the petrol pumps

I thought that the whole point of getting you to go inside to pay was to make you walk by rows and rows of junk food, and encourage you to make some impulsive additional purchases.

Will this make it harder to identify 'drive off' thefts? Or will the cashier immediately get some sort of notification that you've paid?

Starting a car puts out how many thousand volts through a coil (some of which have bad insulation and create sparks everyday)? How much power goes through a starter motor, that unshielded electrical device that has brushes and rotors that starts your car? Opening a door with nice carpet causes how much static?

Edit: I get an electric shock every time I get out of a mazda6 wagon... should I never pump fuel? Coz that suits me fine! :p

They busted that on myth busters many years ago. But I think they still have those stupid warnings signs. They are really only playing catchup with this app, as Z energy are going to be bring in a loyalty scheme, with all the flybuys info they have.

If it only works with BP Fuel Cards, then you can't put junk food on those cards ..
At least that was my understanding when I had access to a company car and a BP Fuel Card 6-9 years ago

I'm pretty sure you can get an "All Services" fuel card that will let you buy anything, but more importantly, if you want to grab some junk food while filling up the work car, there's nothing stopping you paying for some junk food with another transaction so no doubt they would get a bunch of sales that way.

Loaded up the app on my phone. Signed up with email address, phone number etc. Added my BP card, which then needs to be accepted by your account administrator (which in my case is me). It does this by a simple email to card administrator with "accept" or "Decline" link.

Drove to a BP.

Opened app (whist still in my car of course)

It worked out which BP I was at.

Entered Pump number, fuel type, amount/fill and odometer (optional) (whist still in my car of course)

Got out of car

Filled up

Did not go into shop

Got back in car - app acknowledged fill up complete etc

Drove off

The petrol pump did not explode into flames!

Sounds pretty cool, i may have to try this once the BP near work goes up.

Nice to see stations are steering away from the OMG its a phone stance.

Would be nice to see the odometer get some logic thrown in there for those who use the many fuel consumption apps out there just as a handy statistic.

Also means if I do need to go in store cause I need to pee, I don't need to:

A. hold on longer while I wait form for my car to fill. Or

B. start filling, go in store to pee, go back out of store, hung up pump, go back in store and pay, go back out of store and drive off.

I can now:

C. start filling, go in store to pee, back out of store, hang up pump and drive off :)

In regards to fire risk relating to flammable vapors, this is the kind of stuff I deal with for a living. (Industrial sites with completely odorless flammable gases, explosion panels built into roofs of certain rooms, a past case of tools clinking together catching the air on fire...) This is serious don't treat is as a joke, but that said a petrol station is intended for public use, so just not doing anything too stupid should be quite sufficient

In regards to retail petrol stations most of the place is "Zone 2" (An area where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or liquids are not likely to exist under normal operating conditions),

Some areas are classified as zone 1 (An area where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or liquids are likely to exist under normal operating conditions):

a small sphere around where the bower goes into the car (flammable gasses displaced from car tank by liquid - no vapor recovery in NZ like is the norm in the USA (although more for environmental reasons than safety reasons))
A big sphere around the tank vents (gases displaced when a tanker truck is filling the underground tanks)
Drains - collecting point for heavier than air fumes, and fuming liquids i.e. petrol

Inside of pipes & head-space of tanks etc are Zone 0 (An area where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or liquids are present continuously or for long periods of time under normal operating conditions).

All non EX-rated or non intrinsically safe electrical equipment could potentially spark, so the petrol station must ban them. (yes the risk of a smartphone sparking is very low. but it could under a fault condition or if say the user swapped a battery on the forecourt - therefore they must be banned) Most petrol station seem to fail to enforce these rules though.

In regards to car starters, they cannot fall on the ground or into drains, they are up of the ground (many of the vapors at petrol station are heavier than air), and are fixed away fumes that occur at the cars petrol tank inlet, so these cannot come into zone one areas.

If there is ever a big petrol or worse liquid LPG spill when you are at a petrol station, this poses a large risk. Get out of the area ASAP - do not start your car, unless you are in it and it is already running, leave on foot. Wait for it to evaporate before you go back. Liquid LPG spills especially make massive flammable gas plumes (as it boils at room temperature)

This has to be better than the Mobil Service station customer experience. I drive up, noone comes out to help, I press 'fill' ion the pump and put the nozzle into the fuel hole of the car, nothing happens. I press the button for help, and get a woman screaming down the the speaker saying 'YOU'LL HAVE TO WAIT, I'M SERVING CUSTOMERS'. I put back the pump and go to another petrol station.

I guess they have the rule to cover their arses in case of a very very unlikely event, eg for insurance reasons, where they can show they had a warning inplace.
