I was told imported cars are recalled as well - anyone can confirm? Do imported car owners need to request the recall themselves?

Probably, as the local car brand reps won't have a clue who owns what or where.

They should be able to get current ownership details of any affected vehicle from NZTA.
Although it tends to fail under load whenever a new story on airbags is run on the MSM :)

Correct, I received notice from Toyota directly regarding one of my imported vehicles, last year I think when the issue first arose. They said they would get in touch once more information came to light, looks like I'll be in a queue....
Dingbatt: I would suggest that unless you have taken your import to a franchise dealer and have it logged into their system then the parent company won't have any idea that your car is even in the country.
When the car is first Registered in NZ, the vin number, body number etc are recorded and put into the NZTA database. Recalls like this will be notified via that database.
I have had two imported vehicles recalled without them ever going to the local dealer.
I have a Subaru (Jap import) and contacted Subaru NZ and they told me to sign up to their website as a Subaru owner and if the recall affects me, they will get in touch.
For the Subaru Owners, I was told the recall has affected 2004-2007 Subaru Imprezas at this stage.

I had both Honda NZ and Toyota NZ get in touch when my imports arrived. But it may be that they have an agreement to be notified?

Was your car imported directly by a Toyota dealer? I wonder if I need to register with Toyota

Nope.

"What is the process for a recall?
When a vehicle manufacturer has identified a safety related recall, their NZ representative sets about researching how many vehicles are currently in NZ. This is done by first assessing the manufacturer’s vehicle owners’ record system and then verifying this with the NZTA motor vehicle register. There are strict criteria in place for authorising the release of vehicle owner details to third parties for safety or enforcement activities.
Once the number of affected vehicles is identified, the manufacturer sets about contacting vehicle owners advising them of the seriousness of the recall and what they should do to have the fault rectified. NZTA assists in this process by authorising an advisory letter to be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle also advising them of the recall and what they should do to have the fault rectified.
The vehicle manufacturer will coordinate a convenient time with the vehicle owner to have them bring their vehicle to the nearest franchise dealer to have the fault rectified. Should the vehicle owner not respond to the manufacturer’s request within a suitable period of time, the manufacturer may then request NZTA to place a ’ban flag‘ on the vehicle."
Yes my 1994 Mazda import had an ignition switch recall a few months ago - we just got a letter from Mazda to take car into dealership for the fix.
I received a letter from Toyota New Zealand in November last year that my imported Spacio was recalled for airbags and once parts arrived they would send me a registered letter and then to take to nearest dealership to have replaced. I never contacted them to say I had an imported car, they did it. Of course still waiting for the letter. Not worried as I have known of the faults since 2013 and worldwide between 40 and 100 million cars and put all in perspective the risk is very low. But Toyota were proactive contacting me

If it gets extended to cover the 98-ish Subaru's, then I'll take the airbag down to them. Not sure they'll bother replacing it given it's sitting on a shelf in my garage currently. :-)
