Northwest motorway and waterview connection is nearer to opening day.

What are the likely effects of this new connection? I heard talkback radio a few days ago more or less raising conspiracy theories about the delayed opening, but I'm more interested to talk about predicted effects when it does open.

I'm thinking it will ease the southern motorway a lot, but I'm not sure it will do much for the northwestern except make it now an attractive route to the south from Albany/Glenfield area and add vehicles.

It'll likely do what such motorways have always done: shift the congestion problems to somewhere else.

I'm keen to see it open up.

being that i travel down hamilton way a fair bit, will cut out the need to go to the end and move to the southern.

I'm not so concerned as to what it will do to traffic, i expect you will get a fair few people trialing it when it first comes out etc..

What will be the result? Probably just extend the car park slightly and give people more space to cue up.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Off Peak it will stop the 'Rat Run' through Carrington, Mt Albert and Mt Roskill, something I'm sure the residents will appreciate, not having huge trucks in their residential streets.
Connecting the North Western Motorway to the South Western Motorway will cut about ten minutes from the transit. But during peak hour(s) the NW Motorway blocks from Westgate to Te Atatu. Then they are going to operate metering lights during peaks to prevent vehicles being stationary in the tunnel. Traffic already backs up onto the Motorway from the traffic lights at the intersection with New North Road. Since the tunnel entrance shares the same offramp, that will only get worse.
I haven't even addressed what happens at Manukau when the South Western rejoins the Southern. It is already terrible and will only get worse when North Shore traffic uses the ring route.

Has improved significantly since the additional lanes have been partially opened, fingers crossed it doesn't revert back to the bad old days.

I'm guessing those conspiracy theories you're referring to were that they are waiting until the school holidays to open so there will be less traffic on the roads and day 1 won't be a stand still traffic jam? Given the guy who is saying that runs Transport Blog, I'd say its more of a very suspicious squinty eyed challenge of the official line than conspiracy theory. Of course you could be referring to something else..

As for the motorway itself, I mean really it's good to have but it is not going to ease congestion on any of the motorways at all. Having to exit onto suburban streets when travelling from the airport was always farcical and I'm glad it's now fixed, and good to have an alternate to Spaghetti Junction, but this is just one small piece of the whole city motorway system, and the entire system is broken.

I suspect it could take some of the traffic off the Gillies Ave on ramp in the morning, drivers (Mt Roskill/Blockhouse Bay/Green Bay/Mangere Br/Onehunga ) may choose to get on to the SW , go through the tunnels then into the CBD or bridge. So a more congested NW from the tunnel exit into CBD

At night queues before getting into the tunnel, as exit to NW going west will be a bottleneck.

At some stage people will learn that living in West Auckland and working in South Auckland or vice versa cant happen in Auckland.

I think school/bank branch workers etc need their employers to smarten up and locate workers work places closer to home.

No different to people on the North Shore who work in South Auckland and have clogged the bridge for decades. At least they have the busway for commuting into the central city. That was dropped from the NW Motorway upgrade to save money.
In the end I chose to live where I live and work where I work and as such try not to complain about traffic. Luckily I do shift work and am more affected by the motorways being closed at night to do the roadworks.

The tunnel can't make things worse but I don't think it will be a silver bullet.

Yeah could have been. There seemed to be more than one theory being discussed. I was only half listening.

I was thinking the same thing.

At best this new connection will allow northbound traffic to bypass much of inner Auckland and Spaghetti Junction......but southbound....what a mess. The whole thing is a faster way to a new motorway parking space in either direction. Maybe it will sped up some local journeys that go on / off before the choke points at either end.

School traffic is the enemy. If someone was brave enough to tackle that issue, Auckland's traffic congestion woes could become eased. The tunnels/motorways etc is just catchup to past delays in infrastructure growth.
