Hi Fellas

I am after a reliable car valuer or assessor to whom I am happy to pay for his service hoping that he / she can provide me help in buying a new car.

At the moment I am talking to the showroom dealers and they don't seem to reduce even a 500$ from what they have advertised.

If anyone in this forum knows about how to crack this or any tips in this regard would be highly appreciated.

P.S : Based out of Wellington.

The story goes that you should make them a low-ball offer near fiscal month, quarter or year end when they are keen to get some revenue in the door.

No idea if that's an urban myth or not.

As to your question, I didn't even know there was such a thing as a car valuer or assessor. I'd join AA and ask them.

Some brands have more "rigid" rules than others; sometimes it comes down to the brand and model of your interest.

Do you have a particular model in mind?

Yes my preference would be Toyota. But they seem to be stubborn on negotiations and pretty much pay for what they have advertised for ?

As a whole the new car industry in New Zealand is booming, they are walking out the door. Has been like this for years. So they don't have much incentive to discount, another Joe Shmoe will walk through the door after you leave and buy that car you couldn't get much discount on.

That's the Toyota premium you pay based on the perception of reliability. Also, if you're a cash buyer dealers don't get a finance company kickback to they're less likely to discount from the asking price.

Have you been on test drives. What you want to do is use up their time, so they have invested time into you. Also test drive other brands including Mazda. If you have told them that you are only going to buy a Toyota, why will they give you a discount, because they don't need to compete against anyone.

The other thing is to check out prices of other dealers on trademe. If you are buying new, it doesn't really matter where you buy it from because the warranty should allow you to go to any dealer in NZ to get it serviced etc.

FYI my mate works for a Honda dealership and says they're not allowed to discount however to get around it can "over-value" your trade in..

I'm noticing the same from car dealers ... they are not interested in dropping prices like they used to.

Even using other brand tactics doesn't phase them and am not getting callbacks. In fact I am often seeing the TM ads disappear within days.

It's a bit different across the ditch (whirlpool etc), who are reporting what sort of discounts they are getting.

I know what I did when I was looking to buy my Toyota Avensis: I bought a Toyota Signature Class. Its used cars, but they are in really good shape after they have gone through the whole car, and you get a really good used car warranty on top.

I ended up with 5 year warranty and WOF for life, plus some extra equipment for the car, and at what I think was a reasonable price.

You may need to find a car broker or buyer agent. They have them in Oz, but not sure about nz.

Well with only one brand in consideration and Toyota and Honda known for maintaining their sales prices to within very low discounts or none at all, you haven't left yourself much room. This obviously applies if you are buying new. If you are buying second hand then it comes down to your negotiation skills.

Hyundai offered us a crazy good deal on a car done 550KM, we got around 6K off the asking price, but they left it too long and by then my wife who had been prepared to buy on the spot for a specific price, had seen an Audi dealership down the road and fell in love with the A4. We got a very good price from a dealer in Christchurch, one of the best

dealers I've ever dealt with, and I've dealt wth quite a few in my car buying career.

We also found Skoda very negotiable, Subaru, Mazda not as much, though I think they tend to use higher trade in's.

Volkswagen were very keen to get our business, and whilst their cars were nice, they missed the mark compared to Audi for us.

Hyundai worked hardest to get our business, but they kinda didn't handle the middle part very well. I thought the Hyundai was a better deal and overall better value car for the money, but the Audi is really nice, my wife loves hers, bar a few annoying issues.

I would look at ex-demo cars - often get a good slice off the new price, balance of the dealer warranty and they tend to be fairly well specced. Plenty on Tradme from the main dealers.

Are you buying a car or just looking for a "deal"?

What is it you like about Toyota? What model? How long are you planning to own it? Are you paying cash or financing? Is there a trade-in? Do you want/need fixed price servicing... included servicing? Extended warranty? Any extras (mats, tow-bar, etc).

There is a lot more to consider than just a $500 discount (that may not be a discount at all).

I am looking to buy a car. If i could get a good deal it would be better. Preference is on an SUV but not restricted to Toyota alone.

Also considering Nissan, KIA and Mazda.

A friend and myself are working on this currently and will advise here once the service is available.
Focusing on European vehicles in the premium range to start off with.
