Looking to get Dash-cammed up this year.

Have been browsing the various tech sites for the recommended models and pricing and it seems that Amazon and DIY would be the way to go here.

I have found the Wirecutter to be pretty reliable and thorough with its test, so was going to look at something like the PapaGo or MiVue - https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-dash-cam/

Other sites also recommend the Garmins so will probably check those out. https://www.lifewire.com/best-dash-cams-to-buy-4062264

Not decided whether to go the whole hog and get a rear as well - I am reluctant to start pulling off interior trim, but I really want to control any wiring and directly connect to the car fuse box rather than having it hanging out of a 12v in the dash...

Have you guys bought a recent model or any of the ones recommended in the links above?
Have any of you actually bought and or/paid to have one professionally installed locally? They seem quite limited in the range offered here? (mostly BlackVue?)
Any other thoughts/recommendations/experiences?

I just ordered a $35 cam off ebay, see how it goes, didnt want to spend much on it, dont think ill use it much...

I’ve installed several over the last few cars we’ve owned. The last one I installed myself in brand new car, wires squeezed in inside the A pillar trim. Bought a piggy back fuse holder and it was easy to hard wire in, now permanently connected. Would recommend!

i bought $35 cam from Bed, bath & beyond couple of months ago. i don't know why they were selling dash cams. but ehh.

Watch any such claims on import units/Chinese made. It comes down to the chipset and mass produced optics. Like the action cam copies, a chipset limits the encoding power and quality/fps it can do. Some that claim 1440 may only be a fraction of that interpolated (line shifted) to double the apparent resolution. Result. Soft/grainy images.

This is the one I use. I've hard wired it in the fuse box with a piggy back fuse holder, really simple to do. I like that the USB power wire is connected to the mount so you can remove the camera simply without having to disconnect the power wire.

It has everything I need

1440p at 25fps
GPS
Wifi
G-sensor
and wireless remote to lock a 10/20/30s segment for download later
I like that you can set it at 2.4:1 ratio. Most dashcams set in 16:9 pick up too much sky which plays havoc with white balance.

Definately liking the look of the Garmin 55 - comes as recommended by https://dashcamtalk.com/garmin-dash-cam-55/ and actually seems to be available locally at a competitive price even against Amazon US/UK

...though the temptation just go the whole hog with a BlackVue front/back with a pro install is strong.

I've got the Dashcam 55 and I must say I am quite impressed with the quality and some of the features (eg - speed cameras, notifying if the traffic starts moving in front of you, collusion detection). One of the poorly executed features is the voice command as I would often have it trigger with music or talking in the car. The built in WiFi is handy as I can just download footage straight to my phone.

Here is a video I've recorded today of an idiot tailgating people and aggressively lane switching to give you an indication on quality. Note, since I've turned off voice commands near the end you see me "save" the video but it is simple to do. Also gives you an indication of audio quality.

Looks pretty good!

How have you found the resolution in terms of reading number plates?
It seemed to struggle a little in extreme dynaic ranages when you had a high light/shodw contrast - have you found that an issue?
Considering above, how does it do in the dark?
The FOV looks a little narrower than I would have expected, but maybe that is not the case and is just the way my eyes are processing the view?!

Sorry no idea if they are one and the same. No he has not hard wired it, sits nicely behind the mirror and cable runs around the side under the trim. Why you would want/need better quality is beyond me, on the screen it looks amazingly detailed, just about count the bugs on the approaching cars windscreen.

Not only did I order a device for my car and had it properly installed with all the wiring hidden and connected, but I had another fitted to the rear windscreen.

Both installations were carried out at my home so I didn't have to leave my car a some garage for half a day.
