Around my area, teens have been targetting cars and the local constable has recommended using a steering wheel lock as a deterrent.

Can anyone recommend a good one and where to purchase? I've seen Pro Lock advertised, but some guy has a video on youtube saying that the lock can go bung and that after a couple of years you could be stuck with it on your steering wheel. I don't know much about them.

Any advice gladly welcome.

They're only ever a "deterrent".

Steering wheel rims are a steel ring covered in plastic, you can cut right through them in a few seconds with bolt-cutters, bend the rim out of the way, remove the clamp and drive off.

(OK they're not all plastic - one of our cars has plastic covered in leather - the other has a laminated timber steering wheel).

So don't spend a lot of money - the deterrent value isn't how strong the lock is - the fact that there's any visible lock there in the first place means they'll probably go for another car without a lock. "Opportunist" car thieves certainly don't want to be caught wandering around with large and difficult to hide tools of trade on them like bolt-cutters, and professionals who really want your car will take your car regardless of how good the steering wheel lock may be.

You should be able to get something perfectly adequate at Supercheap etc.

A German Shepherd that is territorial about the car. My great uncle had one, very effective, but a bit hard on the thieves.

This, you are basically hoping they will see the lock and move on before they break your window....

If they really want your car they will just remove the steering wheel and do the drive with vise grip trick...

Anything big and orange, will do

Does your car not have an immobiliser? These steering wheel locks seem quite pointless unless you have a very old car that could be hot wired.

i had one of these with alarm/flashing light and insurance cover.

nice solid design.

the alarm was a bit sensitive - slamming the door would set it off.

but the car never got broken into whilst it was fitted.
