I am thinking of some part time Uber driving, so phoned my insurance company about commercial insurance for my vehicle and was a bit shocked that the premiums would be nearly 3 times more than my private premiums.

Does anyone know of reasonable insurance cover for Uber/taxi/commercial cover, I have contacted a broker, but have not had a reply yet.

I'm in Tauranga,

Thanks

Probably find its because youre actively going to be driving it all the time and at more risk of an incident.

IME, brokers are more expensive than going direct to the insurer.

The answer to your question is on the Uber website: https://www.uber.com/en-NZ/drive/insurance/.  If you register with them I would 'print' that page to pdf for potential future use as it advises that you need personal insurance only and Uber provide 'contingent liability coverage'.

Don't forget to get your P endorsement on your drivers licence.

That page is seriously murky in terms of details thou...

"What's more, we also provide you with contingent liability coverage that works with your personal car insurance policy to help ensure that other road users are protected in the event of an accident. "

There is no mention of whether this provides any cover for damage to "your" vehicle in the event of an accident and you private insurer deem not to cover you...

After looking at this  https://www.rideshareconsultants.co.nz/page/insurance/, I would make sure you had commercial cover....

That page only seems to cover third party liabilities. I'd still be concerned that if I crashed my car while driving for Uber, my insurer would deny the claim based on commercial use of the vehicle

Thanks for the advice,

but as Insurance companies have their (off the record) "how can we weasel our way out of paying this clause" they will not cover anyone moon lighting for Uber under personal vehicle insurance at all and Uber will do nothing to help you as they legally can't.

I asked my insurance company and they were very direct while explaining it to me that I would not be covered at all driving for Uber with private vehicle cover.

Some info here=> https://www.rideshareconsultants.co.nz/page/insurance/

Also again anyone know who offer commercial Taxi/Uber insurance at a reasonably rate.

Cheers

Unless you told them, how would they know? You were just out driving to the shops....

When the other party is asked about those involved in the crash, they will likely say there was someone else in the car sitting alone in the back...

Also I suspect there is probably a declaration you will have to agree to/sign that includes saying  you were using the car for personal purposes....

A lot of the reason these side-gigs get away with being cheaper is they shove the liability onto the "contractor"..

I would say there will be a note on my insurance file info now, plus they will see my licence has a P endorsement and my car has a COF instead of a WOF,

if police and/or injury are involved while carrying a passenger they would find out, I do have one quote back that's a little cheaper than my insurer, but it's still up there, will do a bit more research tomorrow, then decide.

Emphasis mine. Yes, make sure you keep as good a forensical trail of that PDF. They site is difficult to navigate & you never really know when things change.

Very big part of this is also discussed elsewhere on the net. There is/was a difference between "being online & waiting for a rider" vs. ("on the way to collect a rider" vs. "having a rider in the car on the way to the destination"). That was, afaik, how Uber previously weaselled out of their commitment / responsibility to pay.

garbonzai:... Some info here=> https://www.rideshareconsultants.co.nz/page/insurance/ ...

I am an Zoomy / Ola / Uber driver. At the bottom of the the rideshareconsultants.co.nz page that you link, there are contact details for Mark Kreling @ Rodney District Insurance - 022 363 2377 - www.rdi.nz  State Insurance are another one that do Uber / rideshare commercial insurance. You really want to mention rideshare / taxi when asking for quotes. Apparently even commercial insurance is different to rideshare / taxi insurance.

I previously had insurance with AA & they seemed fine with 10hrs of driving a week. My 20+ was not acceptable.

  • There is a Facebook group called 'Uber & Zoomy Drivers (New Zealand)'. Generally not much help.
  • FYI, Uber sent out an event notification for a Tax session with Woohoo on Wed, 23rd Jan in Auckland.
  • I like the Ride Share Guy podcast

PM me if you want to chat.
