so it seems i'm from a different planet, as my car system connects to phone via bluetooth, the touchscreen is so laggy and in-sensitive that everytime i try adjust the sound the risk of crashing goes up 1000%.

i gather the world has moved on to apple carplay and android auto.

i'm on android and wife on apple

is there a headunit that sticks out with a massive 16:9 screen that allows us to play video while driving?

can you play video from youtube, netflix, disney plus?

wired is better than wireless (for now?)

i have looked at the webpages and they range from $1000-$2000 (i'm from a small town and nobody that i've been to can tell me anything) and can't make head or tail of anything. looked on trademe and there are a gazillion units of uncertain quality.

help!

other information

- have a rear camera

- have a mic already

- will be upgrading speakers to better ones but it seems the cost of 4 speakers come in at less than 1/2 the price of a head unit. ???!

Fyi, unless it's changed in the last 20yrs.. screens capable of videos visible to the driver while driving.. not so legal.

Only if it's while on acc not running/on.

It's why old-school popup units stopped taking off. And rear facing headrest ones did instead.

Play video while driving? Has there been a law change? As above, this used to be forbidden, and any display within view of the driver had a switch (attached to the handbrake, from memory) to disable video when the vehicle was in motion.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

2.5 Televisions in motor vehicles
2.5(1) Except as provided in 2.5(2), any part of the image on a television screen fitted in a motor vehicle must not be visible to the driver of the motor vehicle from his or her normal driving position while the motor vehicle is in motion.

2.5(2) Subclause 2.5(1) does not apply if:

(a) the television screen is fitted in the motor vehicle only for the purpose of assisting the driver to reverse safely, by showing a clear picture of the area directly behind the motor vehicle; or
(b) the motor vehicle is a passenger service vehicle and the provisions of Land Transport Rule: Passenger Service Vehicles 1999 are complied with; or
(c) the screen is fitted as original equipment by the vehicle manufacturer and is designed so that only information relating to the navigation, safe operation and control of the motor vehicle can be displayed on the screen while the motor vehicle is in motion; or
(d) the screen is only capable of displaying text and any change to the text on the screen is controlled manually by the driver.

Believe they still get a tv screen classification

Time to upgrade to that Tesla Model 3 that you seem to be on the fence about 😉 Comes with a large built in 16:9 display with YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, etc and its own data connection 👍🏻

Won't let you play those while driving though. You'll need to upgrade to the newer Model S next year which has a rear display for that capability 😉

i'm thinking what's the point if it won't let my kids watch video while driving.

i heard it has a pretty good sound system but the rear passengers will be squatting, so not ideal for long drives.

do i need a rocket to move the kids around a town of 100,000 people - would be good for weekend drag races though.

also not sure about electric doors. if they get damaged in an accident how do you get out?

if i can afford a model S i would be getting a porsche or audi

Electric doors have mechanical overrides, at least they do in the Model 3. You might not need the 0-100 power for carting around kids, but considering they're one of the safest cars on the road at the moment I'd consider that a worthwhile consideration.
