I feel like we should all know this before they put them up...

Who owns the cameras all along the Wellington Motorway? What where the reasons why they are there?

the 2 by the Terrace Tunnel are owned by Citylink and the others by Transit NZ

I think they are there to monitor traffic flow

Surveillance. They look as though they are part of Transit's nationwide motorway cameras, but these ones link directly into the base at Waihopai and then onto the greater ECHELON network from there. There are some subtle differences between these cameras and Transit's ones - you need to be up close however to spot them.

Coupled with license plate recognition technology borrowed from central London (for their inner city tax) and GPS, they position exactly where you are at any moment on the motorway network, and this is relayed back to intelligence.

And of course when the traffic gets heavy they will also do congestion charging so you get a London type of bill every time you drive past one..

But wait there's more. Auckland style onramp traffic lites to slow your day down even more..

I was reading some US study that shows that those onramp traffic lights actually help smooth the traffic.
