My 2008 Mercedes B170 came with a double DIN radio bulk bought by a Japanese importer who converted all their JDM to NZ radio with reverse camera and touchscreen. It seems they did a deal with a Chinese radio maker to give them a bulk deal.

I hate it

Clearly designed by a desk-jockey engineer not a driver who actually had to use it every day. Fiddling with its controls invites a car crash. The touch screen does not work great and it requires diverting eyes from the road. And the reverse camera is bleached out, probably meaning more money to spend, so better to replace it entirely.

In contrast, my 2012 Mercedes SLK has an OEM radio that has a great ergonomic design, but it's outdated. The era of CD's are gone. The GPS works but is antiquated, especially as it does not seem to receive traffic conditions. The Bluetooth connects for phone calls but not other functions. Yes, I can hack in a Bluetooth device to the USB, but that means running in AUX. It would be nice to replace it as well, but the priority is the B170.

Most aftermarket radios are touchscreen, with controls that are not driver friendly. The era of real knobs and buttons had something going for it that today's aftermarket radios don't - the driver kept eyes on the road, not looking down to make a change.

And a lot of today's aftermarket are real bling looking, but I don't wear a lot of gold chains or pimp up my car. I want something that fits the car, is driver friendly and hopefully understated, although if anything has to be sacrificed, looks go before performance.

After spending a few hours looking online, I thought I might see if someone else shares my views, has already gone through the pain and found a great radio for 2022. The ideal would have:

  • Bluetooth interface that runs GPS and Spotify and AM/FM radio, with an interrupt for phone calls. In other words, not much different than a modern Android phone except running through the car speakers.
  • Reverse camera with the safety lanes
  • A real dial for sound volume, real buttons for key controls and a real power off button that works instantly and can be found while keeping eyes on the road (best if integrated with the volume control (turn to lower or raise volume, press to power off).
  • Integration with my OEM steering wheel controls (would be nice)

The ideal would be a radio that simply takes over all the controls on the Android screen - so the Google maps is emulated on the screen with the phone in ones pocket, not magnetically held to the dashboard. In other words, a horizontal cell phone design, but with real button and knob controls that can be changed by touch, not diverting eyes from the road.

If anyone has gone down this road, I would appreciate hearing from you.

You seem to be describing Android Auto without actually mentioning it.  Personally, I would never buy a head unit without Android Auto and/or Apple Carplay, so use that as a starting point for selection.

Unfortunately, few AA units have the physical controls you prefer, although in my experience they can be integrated with steering wheel controls so physical buttons on the unit are less important.

This unit: https://www.hyperdrive.co.nz/product/120211/kenwood-dmx9720xds-wireless-apple-carplay-android-auto  looks interesting, but expensive.

There are also some Sony AA units on SCA which have some buttons: https://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/p/sony-sony-xavax3200-apple-carplay-android-auto-head-unit/618231.html?cgid=SCN010307#start=13

I recently had one of these Blaupunkt units fitted to one of our cars and it is OK: https://www.qualitycaraudio.co.nz/blaupunkt-bpa799play-apple-carplay-android-auto-bluetooth-usb-nz-tuners-car-stereo-12160

Thanks for the leads. The Sony is not quite what I had in mind, but if I can get it to work with the steering wheel controls, it might suit.

After writing this question, I came across this https://radio-upgrade.com/products/mercedes-benz-a-w169-b-w245-viano-vito-sprinter-gps-navigation-car-stereo-2005-2012?variant=14156908298283

Need to study it more to determine what it actually does, but it is interesting. Any thoughts?

I am in a similar boat but mine is a Prius not a SLK :-)

In my car I have a 9" touchscreen but in Japanese and can not be converted to English.

I have looked at that Kenwood and is getting close to being the front runner but I cant justify the expense. Most of these devices are designed for LHD cars and so the manual controls are on the far side of the radio, the big thing for the Kenwood for me is that it can connect two Bluetooth connections at the same time which I am looking for, for some reason Kenwood and JVC do this ( they are the same company )

The Sony, I had it's little brother, it was an OK unit, I used it a lot for apple car play ( wired ) it was a little slow and only connect one device at a time, could not store a number of phones in it, you had to pair the phone every time( so my wife could not jump in the car without pairing first, I would have thought there would have been a list of phone and it would connect to one on the list ). In the finish I just connected the cable and that was all good. ( sold that car to get the prius and decided not to remove the radio as I was not THAT keen on it )

The Blaupunkt, Dad got one when he upgraded his car stereo and it was very lacklustre, controls on the wrong side, slow to use and the radio was just plain weird, Blaupunkt used to make the very high end radios but this was not. Again i think only one BT device and that was fine as it was just dad, he just wanted the camera anyway.

If a have lotto win I will look a the kenwood again otherwise I will just keep listening to Newstalk ZB and stored music on the SD card.

John

Just need to be sure the radio can be tuned to NZ frequencies.
I've never seen an android auto unit with as many physical controls, and you are losing screen space because of that but looks right for you

Well today I got the SLK home, the sun came out and I spent the better part of the day getting to know it better... and discovered that despite being told it only has telephone Bluetooth, if I press the Video button on the radio, it shows full audio Bluetooth. And it works. Spotify, Google maps directions, with full controls on the steering wheel and the COMAND system. So I can tick that box.

As for the B170, I suppose I will keep looking. Perhaps pull an original MB NZ New out of a W245 at Pick A Part, or throw the dice on AliExpress.

Hi,

May be Radical car audio will have something for you:
https://www.my-radical.com/car-radios.html?attr_2_din_universell=28

Carbitlink and installation kit for Mercedes but they don’t appear to have lots of buttons on their equipment.

I couldn't agree with you more on having a tactile knob for the volume control.  Searching for a touch screen control in the dark is plain dangerous.  If you can't have steering wheel buttons then it's just about impossible to find a modern fully-featured unit that has one.
