Picked up the Kia EV6 today. 

 

Looking at at level 1 charger for home use, as I won't be getting a level 2 charger installed any time soon.

 

Any recommendations on models would be greatly appreciated.

 

Also, how do I know if I can go for a 8 or 16 amp version?

We do not have level 1 chargers in NZ, that is 110v talk.

Is it new? Specs says it comes with one already.

The EV6 does indeed come with one.  It is 10A only, so about 2.4kW.  I haven't removed mine from its case :-)

Hi if the provided charger cable is the same as my MG and from what I can tell most other brands, they are only likely to do around 7amps, so 1.5kW.

This works for me with my everyday 100-120km trip, it's always back to 100% by 6am next day.

That said the sweet spot price wise and charge rate wise is a 16amp cee caravan plug, this means it can fully recharge from 20% overnight and still easily work with existing 2.5mm cabling and existing 20-25amp MCBs on that circuit. Moving to 32amp opens a few more cans of worms sparkie wise.

Go back to the dealer. It's clearly included with all models, and should really be included with 2nd hand vehicles too.

Assuming you brought the car new, it is listed on the spec sheet, so should have been included, along with a Type 2 to Type 2 Mennekes Cable. These are worth several hundred dollars combined, so well worth inquiring about.

 

 

 

Perhaps double check both the frunk and the tub under the boot floor (on non subwoofer versions of the car), to make sure it hasn't been tucked away.

Most brand's of domestic socket charge cord, lack temperature monitoring of the plug, so if the seller wants to stay within worksafe guidelines need to be limited to 8A. (The cord I use for my leaf is like this. 8A max, in reality a bit less)

 

 

 

The unit provided by Hyundai / Kia is quite a good one. It has temperature monitoring built into the plug, so is set up to draw the full 10A rating of a domestic socket, as long as the plug doesn't get too warm. Really it is the best option available if you want to use a domestic socket.

 

If you want slightly more power but not a wallbox, you could have a sparky install a 16A caravan socket at your home, and plug a suitable portable cord into it. But If you are getting a sparky out, you might as well just go for a wallbox, the best value one of which is the tesla one at $800 (works with any type 2 EV), so only a couple of hundred more than a 16A portable cord.

The one Tesla provided/makes available for purchase is also capable of pulling the full 10A/15A as it has the temperature monitoring built into the plug as well.

The car is used and one of the first EV6 in the country 'owned' by Kia NZ. I love the car but feel there is some mystery behind its usage; covered by warranty and we will argue that when it comes to it. 

 

No cables provided.

 

I bought a OEMAudio EV Power charger, which was included in the EECA EV charger database (spreadsheet).

Pretty poor form in my view not having one included, even for a second hand car, particularly when sold new in NZ with that item. While you can use the car without, it's such a commonly used/required item.

2 year owner of Japanese import 2019 Nissan Leaf + (62 kWh)

 

 

 

It came with a home charge cable for a 16 A socket and we had a caravan socket installed in our garage - the dealership (Autolink cars, big shout out) also supplied the wall socket with the car FOC, cost a couple of hundred dollars to have it installed plus the cost of a bigger RCD, the switchboard was just through the wall from the garage.  The cable was branded Nissan.

 

 

 

We just plug the car in overnight when its below 100 km expected range and in the morning we have 380 - 400 km and ready to go.  0 kWh to 62 kWh would cost $13.02.  Cant remember the last time I used a public fast charger, I think it was late last year.
