Tunnel I do 80'ish, though often 70'ish due to other drivers too scared to do 80. Were possible out of the tunnel, I do my bit to keep the flow closer to 100.

from my daily experience no matter what the time of day traffic in the tunnel is going 70-80kph.

i will sit just under 90 on the southwestern and norwestern heading towards town and most 99% of other drivers will do the same. there is the odd person that goes faster but generally not many at all go slower.

there were a few patches of the motorway where i could see they would need more signage to enable to 100kph limit to work

They also have the speed camera warning about 2 fairy lights in (which is still about a couple kilometers from the tunnel entrance where the cameras normally are)... Is that to scare people going higher than 80 along SH16 and are not going into the tunnel I wonder.... I did notice a couple of PTZ cameras high up along the motorway that were in action this morning!

sbiddle:

For those who drive this route, what are people's typical speeds now in this area? Does anybody do 80 or so they all just go 100

I regularly see police giving out tickets in the area. I'm guessing most of those were going over 100 or behaving badly around slower traffic.

Most drivers are at 90-95 unless it's busy. It's not uncommon to see a law abiding citizen or maybe a traveller doing 80 with clear road in front for miles and a long tail.

When it's busy in that area it's close to gridlock. Anything in between is possible. Increasing to 100 will be interesting.

They were hammering it late on Friday night, westbound. Invoicing galore.

I always drive at 80km/hr through there with my adaptive cruise control... in the mornings it can get as slow as 60km/hr... but in off peak, not uncommon to see people fly by (going probably at least 100km/hr).

Just to be clear I was talking about the leadup to the tunnel entry not the tunnel itself.

gzt: NZTA today says first quarter next year:

https://i.stuff.co.nz/motoring/98621097/speed-limit-around-aucklands-waterview-tunnel-fixed-at-80kmh-until-early-2018

Seems like a long time.

What a pain, not many actually going 80 already anyhow. They should just do it.

Yesterday afternoon was confronted by a "incident - right lane blocked" sign when entering the tunnel from the West. Speed signs were set at 50 km/h. So I crept through the tunnel in the centre lane at 50 to discover the right lane completely clear the whole length of the tunnel. There was a broken down 4wd after the tunnel on the verge, but clear of all lanes with a tow truck (lights flashing) already in attendance. Talk about an over reaction. Maybe slow the speed approaching the 'incident' but to close a lane was pathetic. Unless of course they wanted to try out the announcement system, which broke in over top of the radio as soon as I entered the tunnel.

As there were no speed signs directly after the incident, I stayed at 50 until past the speed camera. Lots of people didn't though, so I would be interested to see if they got pinged, or if the camera doesn't adjust for temporary reductions.

likely that had just finished letting the response team through the tunnel, and waiting to move the vehicle from the verge
