pricewatch.co.nz is still operating also.

The differences now between akl and CHC is fairly substantial. No wonder the figures look odd to us when the news report on them.

not sure what happened but i paid under $1.80 a litre this morning at Pak'n'save in Rotorua, first time in years it's been that cheap.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Funny.. the day this is asked, Mobil have a 10c off special down here today.

2.03/2.13 at the pump for a while. Dude said he wasn't sure how long, but deff today

Combined with the US$ plumetting a cent this morning again. One can only assume because crude is sub 100 a barrel (has been for a while) we are finally seeing some trickle effect

Price of oil alone doesn't govern fuel price at pump, there are plenty of places in the chain where increased cost can add even if the oil price stays the same. Extraction cost, Refinery costs, Storage costs, Transportation costs, Supply \ Demand, Exchange Rate, Competitor pricing.

Far to simplistic to say oil price as dropped so why doesn't the fuel price drop.

The biggest scam is the amount of tax our own government is collecting off petrol.

a) does it all really go into roads ?
b) if x% goes into super fund do they guarantee we will have super in 30 years when you need it, I mean you paid into right ?
c) ACC levy, how man other things relating to roads has ACC levy already, rego, income tax, insurance (double\triple dipping)
d) GST goes on the after tax price, not the before tax (= tax on a tax)

I dont deny that big oil make big $$$$, but perhaps first we need to deal with our own government who are robbing us at the pump.

If margins are low, they can't be making much profit today.

Mobil James st in Glenfield, North shore, Auckland. Is normally the cheapest on the shore. It is rare when it isn't cheaper than the 2 Mobil and BP by the Tristram rd interchange. Also the stations out west and out south. Always seem to be cheaper than the Shore and Central stations.

That's because margins aren't low. In fact, they've increased over time. Currently the retailer margin, so that's cost per litre sold after buying the fuel, taxes and everything, and having money left to run the station, on a litre of 91 is 36.5cc. That's nearly double what it was two years ago. So they're probably selling, at a conservative guess, about 200,000l/mo on average per outlet, which equates to about $70,000 gross per station selling 200,000l/mo. Just petrol. Not including coffee, snacks, magazines, tobacco, car washes, trailer hire, etc.

Seven years ago, they were consistently surviving on margins of as low as 7c/l with prices at about 170c/l (although margins were more likely to be in the 13-15c/l area. Today, they're earning 35c/l with prices at about 215c/l. Most of that increase isn't taxes, it's added on to the retail margin. Those stations that are offering reduced prices might actually be making a lot more out of the margin than other stations can - maybe the real estate is owned outright, or maybe they're getting a better deal than other stations for other reasons, or maybe the owner operators run the station themselves and employ less staff.

About 187c/l would seem about right if they're going to be earning the same kinds of margins they were a few years back.

and its also feet through the door, cheaper stations generally get more business so can make up for the cheaper prices by having more people buying petrol
