That's pretty cool. I was not aware you could get android head units. Unfortunately its to late for me as a couple of months back I put my old nexus 7 2012 tablet into my car. It works alright but I miss not having any physical buttons at all such as volume control. I use gestures which are not ideal but get the job done.

Thanks. I did however end up spending about $250 for all the non tablet parts and the back looks very messy.

On the plus side I have really enjoyed having Google play music. I've pinned a few albums and every time I'm at home it connects to wifi and seems to download new songs so when I play I'm feeling lucky radio I always get new songs.

Ray I have the TomTom GPS App on my android phone. It wasn't cheap ($80!!!) but it's an excellent GPS app. Every 30 days it needs an internet connection to verify the Google play licence at start up.

Other than that, it runs without internet connection. The price includes quarterly map updates.

An update for you
I have been running Here beta maps for a few months now and it is better than sygic and works really well.
Still has a few issues that bug me - not as customisable like when giving driving instructions as you drive, it shows your estimated time of arrival, but not the remaining time or remaining kms to go.

I've had a parrot asteroid smart running android for 2 years in one car, 1 year in the other.
Awesome unit, they have their own market for car optimised apps, and you can sideload most other stuff e.g. google maps with streetview.

Best bit it it integrates nicely with the car e.g. reversing camera and decent sound on the stereo. You can get steering wheel control integration too if you want it.

I reckon the next few years are going to great for this type of technology

I was skimming over an article in the Herald about the new Honda CR-V... cool looking, under powered, fancy cupholders, blah blah blah, oh and USB and HDMI inputs in the console.... back up the bus....

Imagine being able to just add something like a Android TV stick or Intel Compute stick into your car and use the factory screen/Aux in with some sort of relevant remote control... no cutting, no fancy wiring, no major compromise
